How do I lessen my dependance on sleep?

Asked by freckles (363points) March 21st, 2010

No, I’m not kidding, and I’m not stupid. I know our bodies need sleep. But honestly just because people feed us the line that we have to have 8 hours a night doesn’t mean we really do.

Anyway, I just want to know practical ways to keep myself up later on a regular basis and to wake up immediatly when my alarm goes off in the morning. THANKS!

You’re right – not everyone is the same when it comes to how much sleep one needs. However, if you don’t feel refreshed when you’re alarm goes off in the morning and you have trouble getting out of bed, it means that you’re either not sleeping well enough, or you’re not getting enough sleep.

Do an experiment sometime. Go to bed so that you can devote approximately six hours of sleep for yourself, set your alarm, and see if you wake up still feeling tired. If so, you probably need more rest than just six hours. Tweak the hours around a bit, and eventually your body will make clear exactly how much rest you need. I know you probably don’t want to hear it, but disallowing yourself sleep when your body actually needs it is really unhealthy.

Over the years I have trained myself to use my internal clock. I go to sleep telling myself I will wake up at a certain time and I always do within a few minutes. I also go to sleep telling myself that the second I wake up I will tell myself, It’s time to get up and take a shower. No snoozing. It takes time but you can do it.

@MebiByte I know. :) But too much time had passed since I initially answered the question, so the “Edit this response” button had disappeared already.

You can’t change what your body needs. Some people can operate on 5 hours of sleep; I did it for a long time. Wake up the same time everyday; that’s the way to “train” yourself. Your body will start shutting down at an appropriate time to get the rest it needs before your programmed wake up time.

Amphetamines work pretty well, but they’re not very good for you

You could try to get manic. Manic people don’t need much sleep. Hell, they can stay up for days at a time. Of course, you pay for it later.

What you should do is go to bed early, and get up early naturally. Do whatever you want to do at midnight at 4:30 am when you get up on your own.

Upload your mind into a computer. Otherwise try being human. Sleep is part of human life. If you sleep less your learning and memory will suffer.
