If I had a friend help me put on a new hard drive on my laptop, is there anyway to find out if he snuck a keylogger spy into it?

Not that I don’t trust him, but…

How can you use the word “friend” in a sentence like that???

davidbetterman's avatar

The semantics of the word friend is not the issue. Finding a spy is. Please direct your replies to that end.

Yes!!! All you need is some rope, a pair of pliers and a hand held blow torch !! You’ll find ou with in seconds.

It might be detectable with a spyware detection program.

A “zero objects found” result might not necessarily mean that a keylogger isn’t there, but I guess a spyware scan would be a relatively simple step to start with.

Here’s a list of some keystroke logger detection programs.

I’m with @anartist If you have a “friend” and it would even cross your mind that he or she might have installed a key logger onto your computer why the hell would you have let him anywhere near it? I guess I just have a different definition of friend than some people.

@davidbetterman well, excu-u-use me!

@davidbetterman post your trubbles and your HiJackThis logs on Spyware Warrior and get a helper.

@Pretty_Lilly I like your style!

I’m glad you got your answer, despite the odd premise for the question.

I hope your “friend” reads this thread.

I don’t really think my friend would do such a thing.
But the thought crossed my mind, and I wondered if there
were a way to discover such a program.
But I suppose it could be anywhere.

Anyway, it would be interesting to be able to find keyloggers regardless of their origination.

In case you don’t have HiJackThis here is the cnet download site:

Just wipe the drive and start over. It’s installed, so now it’s yours. Have at it.

If you’re so fascinated withall this spyware stuff—definitely go to Spyware Warriors
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/index.php—there is no charge for this service—
You will learn a lot following your helper’s instructions precisely, as each helper is learning to improve helping skills by working with you. They are a little pissy about following their protocol to the letter and your request can get tossed if you don’t.
But if this stuff turns you on, you can learn to become a helper too .. the helpers all seem to take some training at some online anti-malware university—bsomething that is free. knock yourself out!

@anartist yuu-uu-uur excused! At least by me. :)

Probably would have been better to omit the friend and simply ask “How can I detect and remove a keylogger?”

Note to self: edit questions carefully, take out unnecessary info.

That Zemana link leads to a free 15-day trial. Maybe the one-year offer expired?

The product did get a good review from CNET, which is a site I trust.

On the other hand… If I felt that I was being spied upon, and I have been spied upon in the manner you suggest, I use it as an opportunity to have some fun. Set em’ up. Knowing someone is listening in can be a blast. You can be nice, or mean… Start talking about a surprise party for So N So and have them show up with nobody there. Or make your screens saver one to say ”I know you’re watching me. I’m watching you too!

@jaytkay It was only a few days ago 3/18/10 that I downloaded my copy, and although I don’t recall the steps required I’m assuming if you follow the instructions to the letter it will result in a 1 year license. If you can’t get it to work I can take a look at it again.

edit:

According to the instructions you need to:

1. install software
2. reboot computer
3. run program (it should run automatically, actually), open the gui and press “Agree and activate now”. After that your license should last for exactly 365 days.

Why would ask this friend to put on a new hard drive if you seemingly don’t trust them enough…since you are asking about a key logger
