What is the definition of a 'redneck'?

Asked by Tennis5tar (1263points) February 1st, 2007
I presume this is a term used in the USA. I got asked it on an online fun quiz I did and have seen it somewhere else too. What or who is a redneck?

A redneck is a term, most often offensive, referring to white people who are very low class.

It also usually implies that the person is from a rural area.

origin: such a person works outside on a farm all day and so his or her neck gets sunburned red.

Insulting term - implies southern, uneducated, poor, beer-drinking, dawgs lying around, hunting, squirrel and rabbit en brochette, pick-up trucks...cowboy boots, trailers or shacksbad teeth, no lawn mowing, C & W music - (Google Jeff Foxworthy - who got rich from his riffs on this) theme.)

Now some of the humor has become part of the vernacular. It's tricky - knowing when and when not to trot it out. Best to err on side of caution unless you know your audience very well. As a Jew,for example, I feel comfortable making and listening to good Jewish jokes only w. my Jewish friends.

If you have more sofa’s in your front yard than in your house, you might be a redneck.

From Wikipedia:

“Another possible source of the term redneck comes from The West Virginia Coal Miners March or the Battle of Blair Mountain when coal miners wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves as seeking the opportunity to unionize.”

You might be a redneck if you live in a rural area and behave as such.
