Whats the difference between a tune-up and a repair?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) March 23rd, 2010

My central heat and air conditioning unit is about to have a spring tune-up by a local company. my question is this: what exactly is the difference between a tune-up and a repair? during the tune-up, if the technician discovers a problem with my ac unit, does the tune-up then become a repair? whats the difference and where does one start and the other end?

Tune up is maintaining, and repair is if it’s actually broken. If he finds a problem during the tune up, then you will have to have it repaired.

A tune-up is basically like a thorough cleaning and inspection of various parts of the car, which might also include some part replacement. A repair is exaclty that; something is wrong with the car and it needs to be fixed.

A tune-up is another word for a service. Like a service on a car.

It doesn’t really matter. If it’s for rental property you own, either way you can deduct it. If it for your home you will pay.
If a company is offering a “free tuneup” you can bet they will find something to repair.
A paid for annual tuneup should consist of cleaning the coils, fans, a pressure check and top off if low. $80.
