What are the first symptoms of Breast Cancer?

Asked by Sophief (6681points) March 23rd, 2010

I have a friend that has a brown mark just underneath her nipple. She said it feels like, and looks like peeling skin. That is all she has told me. Obviously this can be looked up on Google, but I wanted to tell her advice from real people, and what they think.

Thanks.

There is Paget’s disease that starts as a rash on the breast, but is cancer. I have very limited knowledge on the subject. It is fairly rare, but that does not mean someone can’t have it. I don’t know if it typically is red or brown? Might matter how dark your friends skin is to begin with? If the mark growing? Is it perfectly round? Does it itch or hurt? If it is new it is probably worth while to get it checked. Although, if it is small and round like a typical mole I doubt it is something to worry about.

Breast cancer is more often a lump than something visible on the skin. A brown mark could be skin cancer or something benign.

@JLeslie I don’t know much, but it is perfectly round and she is fair skinned. I don’t think it has grown and it doesn’t itch and it’s not painful.

Thanks for replying.

My Mom had Paget’s disease of the breast. It is a form of cancer that is very treatable. Not saying that that is what this is; obviously she needs to go the doctor and have it checked out.

@Dibley Perfectly round sounds like a typical mole. Does she ever sun or tanning bed topless? She should at minimum watch it in my opinion. If it grows go immediately to a doctor, otherwise be sure to show it to her doctor at her next appointment.

Another thing to consider is people are supposed to get all over body checks once a year by a dermatoligist. She could schedule one of those and point this particular mole out. People don’t realize that many melona start on the bottom of the foot, which would be overlooked by most. Top of our heads should be checked, sometimes we get burned where our hair parts are over and over again, and we would not be likely to notice. Our backs also get overlooked, because we can’t easily see our own back.

Meanwhile, I am not a doctor, and even a doctor can not really make a guess or recommendation without seeing it. It is worth saying that most dermotoligical cancers are easily fixed when caught early. You can google photos of skin cancer.

@JLeslie No she doesn’t, she’s like me, avoids them.

@janbb Thanks.

@Dibley Your friends best bet would be a biopsy. They can remove the mole and the Pathologist can look at it under the scope. That’s the only definitive diagnostic tool that I know of.

I discovered I had breast cancer when the mammogram showed a peppering of clumped tiny white spots that are called microcalcifications. A speedy biopsy showed they were malignant. I had a lumpectomy and 20 lymph nodes under the arm removed. The cancer had only traveled, thank goodness, to the two sentinel nodes.

I had no sensations and no palpable lumps.

You could have breast-cancer even when you have no bump or spot showing. She should go see a doctor.

She should go to the doctor and have it checked if it has changed in size. You always want to make sure it’s not anything dangerous- She’s go to take good care of those boobies because they make outfits look fantastic!

A doctor can determine if there are any signs through finding a lump, or discoloration and by shadows on a mammogram

Why do I not find booby jokes funny when we are discussing breast cancer or melanoma?

@gailcalled Tell me about it.

Irritable Breast Syndrome affects young women, but I’d have to google the early symptoms, too. I know it gets overlooked or poo-pooed too much.
