How confident are you in the cleaning power of your automatic dishwasher?

Asked by Captain_Fantasy (11447points) March 23rd, 2010

Just how clean do they get your dishes?
Isn’t it just a haphazard rinse cycle with some soap involved?

If they look clean, it’s good enough for me. If there’s still crap on them, I’m not so happy.

I don’t have one. Boo :(

I’ve used them, though, and they are fantastic. You definitely need to rinse off all food stuff before putting it in there, especially if they sit for a while – there is no “scrubbing” feature. I’d be very confident in the ones I’ve used before. It does seem that it would save water, unless you have a sink controlled by foot pedals and/or a two compartment sink where one is for soaking/washing and the other for rinsing.

I am very cocky about it.I will pit her against any dishwasher out there.
It’s so much more than soap and rinse cycle….sooooo much more! :)

I hate dishwashers. I had mine removed when I remodeled my kitchen.

My dishwasher is amazing. His name is Paco. Paco does more than just clean dishes.
My duck is a slob. When she eats, she gets food all over herself. After she eats her morning donut, I throw her in the dishwasher and she comes out spotless.
I’ll probably do that with my kids as well.

I really don’t trust them at all. When my husband and I first moved in together (only dating at the time) I would never put the dishes in the dishwasher and did them all by hand. My husband found this ridiculous. And when we got a nicer apartment, it took months for me to use the dishwasher. I still think it’s not the same as handwashing.
This is all the result of never growing up with a dishwasher. We took turns on whos turn it was to do the dishes, and it was one of my favorite chores, now one of my least favorites lol.

@Vunessuh -I did that to my neighbor Steviant. He went in much easier with a little Pam and a kick in the @$$.His eyes just sparkle now! :D

Considering how I just scrape the dishes off and stack them in the dishwasher without bothering to rinse first, I think it does a great job. Once in a while something comes out of the dishwasher with a little speck of something stuck to it, but most of the time everything is perfectly clean.

With five people in this house eating three meals a day, plus snacks for the kids, and almost all of those meals being homemade, I run the dishwasher daily. I love it. If I didn’t have a dishwasher, I’d probably single-handed kill the environment by using paper plates and plastic utensils.

Mine does a great job and almost silent too. NSF rated for sanitation cycle. Takes 2 hours plus to wash and dry. It checks the rinse cycle water as it discharges to make sure it is clear running. It will shorten cycles for cleaner dishes OR lengthen for dirtier dishes.

It is perfect. No rinsing. 50 minute cycle. Kitchenaid.

@Tropical_Willie That sounds like a magical device, nothing like my dishwasher.

i feel like a dishwasher beats handwashing, hands down. handwashing is usually with a sponge that has been sitting, damp until it dries. i think dishwashers make the water hotter than a person could tolerate with their bare hands. i think dishwashers spray the water in all directions, getting it in cracks and crevices that handwashing may not have access to.

It’s a Bosch made in USA ( New Bern, NC )

Mine kind of sucks, but like @MissAusten I have other things to do with my life than wash endless dishes by hand, so I deal with it. With mine, it’s not the the cleaning abilities that concern me, it’s the rinsing abilities. A lot of the time when I take the dishes out they have a faint detergent smell. That’s not too appetizing….

Wife and i first bought a GE Potscrubber years ago. worst dishwasher ever. five years ago, we bought the very best advised by Consumer Reports Magazine. a Whirlpool. it has been the best dishwasher. at the bottom, it has a soft food disposal that really works. we will buy another one. the dishes just sparkle.

Best dishwashing detergent out there is Finish. everything needed for sparkling clean dishes is inside the box. it really works.

When I remodeled my kitchen, I choose the dishwasher with the features I wanted and I got exactly what I wanted. It is a marvel.

I’m pretty happy with mine, but I have a really hard time breaking my “wash the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher” routine. They used to suck, and that’s how it had to be done… I basically used the dishwasher to sanitize already clean dishes. Now I have a good one, but still find myself in my wash-first rut. It takes a conscious effort not to do it! BTW, I second Finish detergent… the one with the ball of rinse aid already in it.
