He was stationed in Italy
Slaughterhouse Five was about his experience in Dresden. That book actually made me go to Dresden in 1999 (we were going to Europe for a few months anyway) and it was amazing to see how some things still hadn’t been re-built after the fire-bombing we did there. But there was a ton of construction going on at the time. It looked like they were taking their time to adhere to the original plans and using the original stones.
The fire-bombing of Dresden is interesting..

Vonnegut was taken prisoner in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Johnpowell correctly states that Vonnegut was imprisoned in a Schlachthaus (Slaughterhouse) in Dresden and he survived the fire-bombing of Dresden in 1945, just before the end of the war,
As a future reference, most of the Battle of the Bulge took place in Belgium and Luxembourg.
