I live in an older apartment building, all the units on the inside with no courtyard. You step out of the building and you’re on the sidewalk. No yards, just a quiet street where we park our cars.
Now I want to finish a few projects of mine that requiring painting and spray painting. Should I just go out on the sidewalk, lay down some newspaper and spray away? I don’t want to have to stay out there the whole time to wait for it to dry…. Anyone been in this situation before? What have you done?

Sorry, can’t really help you with that one since I live in a house. For my art projects it’s either the backyard or the laundry room.
I would either lay down newspaper like you said on the side walk and spray it, then carry it on a corner back up to the apartment. You can always retouch that part you touched. Or if it is not so large an object, you could do it in your kitchen, placing tons of paper around. Making sure you have an enamel based solvent available to clean up any misfires.
You could also ask a friend or neighbour you know if you could use their garage or garden and store it there until it dries.
Take care not to spray around people as they pass or children.
Just do it in your living room. The fumes will make you feel awesome. haha.
set up a little spray booth – some tarps or old sheets and duct tape, pull up a chair and wait…what? watching paint dry is totally fun!
you could rent a storage unit get some tarps and do it at night with the door open; lock it in and let it dry… but be careful, they tend to disapprove of such endeavors. The ones around here make it easy. the walls don’t reach the ceiling for ventilation, and the ceilings are rack metal making it easy to hang tarps and drying lines from.
I’ve done the spray booth in the bathroom thing before, it works too but was more difficult, heh… remember to keep the vent on and a window open. and be ready to find paint where you least expect it >.>
Do it in your apartment by the window(s)so you have ventilation. Point a fan outwards to help push fumes out. Lay painter’s tarp (plastic sheating, about $2) on floor and hang on walls. . . spray away . . . Or if you have a fire escape stairway, you can do it there.
