How can the smell of burnt coffee be removed from a microwave?

Asked by CyanoticWasp (20271points) March 25th, 2010

Someone in our office had a coffee disaster in our office microwave last week. Apparently they were heating some coffee and burned it badly. The white interior of the microwave is now permanently stained with a tan color on the bottom because of the volume of coffee—and the burn. I don’t care about the color, but the stench of burnt coffee lingers in the appliance.

How can this be rectified, short of buying a new microwave? (No GAs for answers that involve “buy a new microwave”.)

wipe it down with a water vinegar solution (1:1)

Wipe it out with a solution of baking soda and water, which will remove the coffee acids from the walls of the microwave.

We had a similar situation with roasted chestnuts in our work microwave – don’t ask. I would suggest either the vinegar solution idea or a baking soda and water solution.

I’m guessing that if you slice a lemon in half, nuke it in the microwave for a couple of minutes in a small bowel of water, and then use baking soda to scrub the inside of the microwave with the steamed lemon water that it could help the odor and stain to get lost.

All of the above.
If that doesn’t work,burn up a doughnut in there…;)

That should be small bowl of water, not bowel… I don’t suggest nuking bowel—it will make a shitty mess!

wipe it down with vinegar and water (equal parts), wipe out with water. Wipe with baking soda and water (watery paste). let the latter stand for a bit (~10 minutes) wipe it out with water. Then boil a few cups of clean water for 10 minutes (may have to do it a couple times). That’s worked in mine for burned sugar, coffee smells, fish, burned fish skin, and a horrifically burned tomato paste/garlic/butter concoction.

A small piece of charcoal works too ! :D Just leave it in there for about 2–3 days !

Clean the interior with vinegar then microwave some vanilla extract and let it sit in there for awhile.
