How can a tanning bed cause a rash?
Last week was my first time ever in a tanning bed. I went for two days skipping a day in between. The next night my skin broke out so bad I did not sleep a wink from the itching. It felt like little electric shocks on my body. Very wierd. There is no rash, no redness, no blotches. I don’t think I am allergic to the cleaner they use to sanatize the beds because the itching occurs on my stomach and it doesn’t even touch the bed. I am giving it up for now, but would like to know what is exactly causing this reaction….

Don’t know, but I know it causes cancer :).
How long did you tan for? Did you use any kind of tingle lotion?
It could depend on what kind of bed you use. There is such a thing as heat and sun rashes that develop. The higher intensity beds can cause these.
I did 5 minutes both times. I didn’t use any lotion.
@KatieDiez Thats so strange. I’ve never heard of anything like that.
It’s one that you lay down in..that’s all I know about the bed.
How much do you really know about (and trust) the “sanitizing” process?
That’s where I’d start.
Ask the person who used before you.
I kind of agree with what has already been said – I would say either artificial “sun poisoning”, or maaaaaybe you need to make sure you clean and sanitize the bed before you get in, usually they will give you stuff to do it (although they already should do it between uses).
I watched the girl spray and wipe it down before I used it. But like I said, I layed on my back and only my tummy was itchy. My sister has been going there for over a year and never had this happen to her.
Did you use any Indoor tanning lotion?
Indoor tanning lotions are typically filled with crazy ingredients that often counter act with each other and tend to go bad very quickly. And those companies that make the lotion aren’t very big brands with strong internal regulations. If a lotion goes bad and you use it in a tanning bed you can actually develop a type of fungus on the skins.
Or also, the person before you used a strong tingle lotion. Benylnicotinate will leach into the acrylics of the tanning bed, and the transfer to the next user.
the last customer had scabies
It could be a reaction to the UV exposure, or it could be completely unrelated to the tanning bed. I think you’re being wise to forgo doing it again.
This is EXACTLY what is happening to me. I just started tanning on Monday. I’m a light skinned person, so I went in for only 6 minutes. Then on Tuesday, I went in for 9 minutes. Then, Wednesday for 11 minutes. When I was in the bed for those 11 minutes, I felt little electric shocks on my skin. But, I thought it was probably normal, just because it’s UV rays soaking into your skin. But, then I got out and as time progressed, it got itchy on my hips and my pelvis area. So, of course I’d be itching them. So, I figured taking a shower with my hypoallergenic soap would help. But, when I got out of the shower, it was the most terrible, painful itch ever! If I’m walking around, it doesn’t effect THAT much. But, if I decide to lay down, it’ll sting like you said an electric shock. It drove me crazy! I felt like I wanted to jump out of my skin. I didn’t go to sleep until 7 AM because of how bad it was. I took 2 showers, 3 baths. 3 benadryls and some of my regular medication. I tried bunches of ointments, lotions etc. I used Calamine Lotion.. no help. Hydrocortisone.. no help. Even a diaper rash ointment, but still nothing. But, finally that Benadryl knocked me out at 7 AM, and I just moisturized my itchy skin after the last shower I took. I woke up the next morning, and I still feel it but not so bad. I guess, you need to give these kinds of things time. Because, this is absoluetly terrible. I wish there was something that made this go away INSTANTLY! So, I know how you feeeeel!
