Best place to send a MacBook Pro for screen repair?

Asked by tarmar (195points) March 25th, 2010

My niece cracked her 13” MBP screen at college. It needs repair. My daughter cracked hers several years ago and $800 later Apple sent back the repaired ‘puter. I found out later there are much cheaper ways to get a screened fixed reliably. Have any of you had a screen repaired by someone besides Apple? I’d appreciate any good ideas to suggest to her. TIA

I swear it’s cheaper to get a new laptop and sell the old. However, you can find screens for a few hundred on ebay. The screen is typically specific to that generation, not just model of laptop. You need to make sure, look up your model identifier in “About This Mac”, “More Info…” to ensure they match. For instance, I have a MacBookPro4,1. I don’t know how easy it easy to get into these newer unibody macs, but it could get hairy. Good luck.

I hate to say this, but I’d sell the laptop and get a new one. Or have an apple certified tech do it.

I had a friend that had the same thing happen, bought a cheaper alternative screen only to have it burn out a year later.

If the Mac is less than a year old Apple will fix it for free (unless she dropped it or did something that was your fault).

If not, you can buy the part and fix it yourself (comes with instructions), if you are so inclined. There isn’t much else you can do besides return it to Apple and pay to get it fixed.

These pay for themselves, by the way. Keep this in mind for the next Apple laptop.
