People who dye to cover gray hair: do you find the gray hair does not take the dye as well as your other hair?

Asked by MagicalMystery (900points) March 27th, 2010

i have some gray strands of hair and i get my hair dyed at a great salon, so i have no doubt about the quality of the dye job. i do find, however, that the gray strands do not take the dye as well as the other hair. the dye seems to not ‘take’ as well to the gray as it does to the other hair. people who get their hair dyed to cover gray: does this happen to you, too?

My hair has been grey since my twenties, pure white nowadays. I did try dying it at one stage, and no, it wasn’t resistant to the dye, in fact it seemed to be the opposite.

myself i think it covers the grey better.

I dyed my hair for years and L’oreal covered gray, but Garnier wasn’t very good.

oh really? i love Garnier. and i think it smells better

My hair began turning gray the day after I crashed my motorcycle into a rolling dump truck and got dragged half a block. I was 19. I can personally testify that what they say about shock turning hair gray is not a myth. Unfortunately I can’t answer your question. To date, I have yet to try hair dye.

@slick44 this was the Garnier of 10 or more years ago.

Ah, man. I wish I had gray hair. Don’t cover up your wisdom. You got to own it.

If you dye your hair grey, do you find that the colored hairs don’t take in the grey as well?

What kind of dye are you using? Don’t use “box” hair dye. You have to get it from a beauty supply store.

MagicalMystery's avatar

@Violet : i get it done at a salon so they use professional stuff (a good salon).

Likeradar's avatar

I get mine done at a salon too. The gray strands do turn out a little lighter than the rest, but they look like highlights, not gray anymore. You should talk to your colorist about it.

I buy from the store, and leave it on 45 minutes. Some products are better than others, but I’m afraid if I name brands, I’ll get in trouble?

Likeradar's avatar

@rowenaz How can you get in trouble if you state your true opinion? Are you employed by any of the companies?

faye's avatar

@Violet I used boxed dyes for years and was generally complimented on my hair.

Violet's avatar

@faye you must have naturally nicer hair then most

MagicalMystery's avatar

@Likeradar : yeah, my gray is dyed but it is lighter than the hair that’s not gray. that’s what i’m wondering, if everyone has the same problem, with the regular hair coming out one color and the gray coming out lighter – not gray any more but not as darkly dyed as the other hair.

I go to a great hair salon as well; and without fail, they return within a few days! However, it’s only in the front, around my temple. It looks like I never even went.

What’s your hair texture type?

MagicalMystery's avatar

@TLRobinson: it’s somewhat fine, straight. i dye it a light color, and at this point i think i could not darken it to a light brown which is more my natural shade, because those grays would show up more than they do with the light dye.

Likeradar's avatar

@MagicalMystery If your colorist is putting one color on your head, which is what they do unless you ask for highlights and lowlights, the darker base color will turn out darker. The dye isn’t uniform. Imagine putting one coat of paint on a wall with a dark color and a light color- you’ll still see different levels of darkness.
