I quit fake sugar and it's been hell. Any horror stories to share?

Asked by SundayKittens (5834points) March 31st, 2010

Three days ago I decided to quit my last vice: Diet Dr. Pepper.
I was drinking an ungodly amount everyday and decided it wasn’t helping me one bit to get healthy. And the more I read, the more I realized I was right.
The first 2 days were HELL. I had a headache that wouldn’t go away, I was so irritable and couldn’t concentrate, and I went to bed by 6:30 pm.
I realized that was from caffeine withdrawl, so it’s been better today after I had some black coffee.
I’m interested to hear any weight loss/headache/killing spree stories from you jellies when you quit the sweet nectar of life! Misery loves company!

When I’ve tried getting off the caffiene, I find that if I drink a lot of water that seems to help. And take some Tylenol. It should pass within a few days.

@kikibirdjones: It doesn’t sound to me like you suffered any physical effects at all from “fake sugar” withdrawal. 100% of what you said could be attributed to caffeine.

@malevolentbutticklish I think you’re right. I guess what I really want to know is in the last part of that question.

I’m trying to edit my question, but I don’t see an option!

@kikibirdjones: The option to edit has expired by now. I have never had any problem with withdrawal. Just schedule it at the most reasonable convenient time where it will have the least effect on work and don’t be a wuss.

Quitting caffeine after having it daily is very tough. The headaches are almost unbearable. I would recommend tea instead to relieve the headache. It has a much smaller amount of caffeine and isn’t bad for you like the carbonated syrup you’re used to.

@silverfly Good idea. I’m not trying to quit caffeine, really….just the fake sugar and carbonation. I think the caffeine withdrawl was tougher than nicotine withdrawl, honestly. Ugh.

malevolentbutticklish's avatar

@kikibirdjones: Quit carbonation? Why?

@silverfly: Quitting caffeine is easy. You have a headache for a couple days big deal.

silverfly's avatar

@malevolentbutticklish Yeah, but they’re not typical headaches that go away with tylenol. They’re debilitating.

@silverfly: Actually a nap may help them. They are due to blood vessel dilation.
