Could asthma be causing my severe migraines?
I had problems with exercise induced asthma two years ago. Eventually after medication I got to a point where I could run without issue but hiking and swimming were out of the question. But now all of a sudden for the past couple of months I have been getting these migraines that have been making me uber bitchy and mean. I thought stress was causing them until today when I was walking to my car and my head started pounding and I realized that I couldn’t breathe right. Is there any chance that asthma might be causing this? I wanted to do some research before I asked my doctor because I’m in the military and asthma could get me an honorable discharge and I’m not ready to get out of the service yet. Any thoughts?

I have “tension” headaches that I relate to allergies and congestion so it certainly seems like a possibility to me.
There is some evidence to suggest that migraines and asthma could be linked.
“This large-scale population-based cross-sectional study shows that migraine and nonmigrainous headache is approximately 1.5 times more likely among those with current asthma, asthma related symptoms, hay fever, and chronic bronchitis than among those without these disorders.” Source
This time of year (assuming you are in the northern hemisphere) there is a lot of barometric pressure changes that can cause headaches, in the US we are seeing it in the bottom ⅔rds of the country also known as tornado season quickly appraching or here already depending how south you are.
Are you sure it is am actual migraine? What has been said about allergies makes sense also, especially if it is actually a sinus pressure headache and not a migraine. Also, if you have started a new medication it could be that. If you have gone off of caffeine, or are drinking caffeine inconsistently you could be triggering headaches.
What medications are you using to control your asthma? It might be a side effect or reaction to that medication (s).
I only take albuterol (sp?) when needed and I have noticed an increased heart rate and occasionally I have had onset of headaches after using it. Nothing as severe as a migraine though.
@rahm_sahriv I dont have asthma though. I’m trying to figure out if I might.
@bright_eyes00 Sorry about that :) I would talk to your doctor about the migraines and not mention the asthma part since you don’t want an hon. discharge. Could just be migraines that are causing the breathing trouble and if they are treated, the breathing trouble would go away. Not a good idea though to leave things out when talking to a doctor. I would suggest seeing a doctor outside the military if at all possible?
As for the pounding headache and not being able to breath with rapid onset- any chance you were having a panic attack?
@rahm_sahriv how often does a person have a panic attack? Thinking back this isn’t a one time occurence. Urgh….this is rather frustrating
