How much math and science is there studying to become a Sonographer/Ultrasound Tech?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) March 31st, 2010

I’m researching this career because I have an interest in it. I’m decent at math and science but I don’t love doing it. I was watching a clip and it said that this is a job for someone that likes working with people, loves math and science.

Anyone out there can tell me something about studying in this field and what the career is like?

Hopefully a lot. You ought to know a lot about biology and physics to operate am ultrasound.

I am in my final year of radiography (a three year course), and ultrasonography is another two years FTE post-graduate study. Sonography is very difficult, I am doing a subject on it right now. It requires a huge amount of knowledge of anatomy, but the most important skill in my opinion is spatial awareness. The physics is very important for study, but in practice it is not as important because a lot of it is already incorporated into modern machines. Ultrasound does not have as rigid a structure of method as radiography. It requires the sonographer to know where to look, and to be able to determine which images are relevant for forwarding on to the radiologist.

If you have the appropriate skills though, it can be very rewarding and has quite a high income. There is strong demand for sonographers here in Australia, especially since it is a rapidly evolving technology and is becoming more useful all the time. Best of luck!

I am a dentist, I did two years at a community college and another year and a half at a state university. Then another 31/2 in dental school then a residency. I took physics, chemistry and organic chemistry at the uni level, I had very ordinary grades and found it very hard, I was fine with biology and anatomy but physics and chemistry I found very difficult. I had alot of help. In actual practise, I never used it (the sales reps and packaging can tell you all you want to know) I would say if you have a ‘diagnostic’ type personality and a rather artistic and painter like brain, go for it!! What @FireMadeFlesh says about spatial awareness is really true. good luck
