12th century(or 1100's) Scottish womans dress?

Asked by ninjakitty101 (34points) April 2nd, 2010

So, i have English project, its to make a costume of what a woman of Scotland in the 12th century would wear. I have found a good site that gives me good detail on how and what the fabric looked like, how you would make it, etc. One problem: it has pictures but i can’t see them! It will say something like:‘error, no picture found’. So, my question is, if you have ANY pictures of what a woman would wear in the 1100’s in Scotland.

Thanks for any help,
;)

Google SCA. Society for Chronological Anachronisms. You should find a contact that will be only too happy to point you on the right direction.

That’s Society for Creative Anachronism.

The library should have books on the history of costumes. Some even have patterns, for people who do theatrical costuming or like to dress up in medieval garb.

Sigh, yes it is.

Contact your local renaissance faire that has numerous re-enactors who make their own costumes who surely would lend a hand to your endeavor!

Here’s a very good picture of a Queen Consort of that time period.Or better yet a whole series of images

If you’re not looking for a queen’s clothing but something more like ordinary people would wear, here is a source.

I tried Googling “british isles 12th century attire” (without quotes). I’m sure there are other Google combinations that would work. The basic garment for a long period was the tunic, usually with a surcoat. Here is another source.

The Renaissance, by the way, was three to six hundred years later.

I’ve visted a recreation of what the home of William Wallace would have looked like and some of the things you would expect to find in the house. This is in the town of Lanark in Scotland. ( I’m Scottish myself ). Everything was very primitive and basic, so the dress at the time would also be very basic. The floors being mud gives a clue as to how basic things were at that period. In short nothing fancy.
