What did you like/dislike about your Teach for America experience?

Asked by msbauer (420points) April 3rd, 2010

A friend of mine is applying for Teach for America. Obviously there are lots of choices and she’s trying to narrow them down. Specifically, she’s interested in early childhood (pre-K) locations, but would benefit from any feedback you have.

Sooooo, how was your city/school/the program overall? Likes? Dislikes?

I’m sorry I have no personal experience to share, but I googled and came up with this interesting article and this blog. Good luck!

A friend of mine taught in the South for TFA. She disliked the way the program was run and her supervisor. I really don’t have any more details to offer.

Advise your friend to really look into the program.

May I ask, Why does she want to do TFA instead of going right for her degree?
There are plenty of students in high-needs areas that you can teach without TFA.

@FarewellStockholm thanks for your response! and i think it’s starting to be a trend to take a year or two off after undergraduate before going on to graduate school. grad school’s certainly demanding, so it gives people some calm before the storm. additionally, after grad school you usually go straight on to work, so it’s a chance to give back and selfishly travel somewhere different for a bit before you settle down. plus it looks great on a resume!

I haven’t done it, but I have a number of friends who have and some who are in the program now. I can tell you right off the bat it’s no “calm before the storm”. It is the shitstorm. You’re a first year teacher with almost no teacher training when you start, you have all the normal first-year teacher work such as making lesson plans (this takes hours and hours each week), grading papers, writing reports for your principal, meeting with students and parents, oh acutally teaching, and besides all that, you have a bunch of meetings and reports for TFA that take up more hours every week. It sounds like a nightmare if you’re the kind of person who actually needs to sleep or wants to have any type of social life.
