It’s not a real instrument it’s the midi version of a string orchestra performing in pizzicato.

Actually, after listening to more of it I heard what you were most likely talking about (the more quiet but fast strumming in the background). That sounds like a midified Chinese Pipa.
Really though, it doesn’t have to be a real instrument since it is synthesized.
it may be synthesized but I know there’s an instrument that sounds just like it. I mat be wrong but I think the instrument was featured in the second Pirates of the Carribean score.
fastly played shamisen? I have the midi for the entire song and I looked under instrument list and it said “shamisen” for the fast clicky type instrument, sound right?
