They already are the worlds most powerful country as they comprise 20% of the worlds population compared to our less than 5%...4 of them for every one of us. Plus we owe them some where near 900 billion dollars. So I’d say China has the upper hand here.

Not a new concept to me, China has been a superior country for decades, it is only now that Americans have been getting serious with the idea that they aren’t #1 anymore.

The rise itself though I would say is rather bad. America is too proud to attack innocent countries, the same cannot necessarily be said for China.

They are not going to be able to take a genuine lead in world affairs until they normalize the way they treat their own citizens, vis-a-vis corruption, censorship, assumption of office, etc. An economic revolution is an incomplete revolution.

Yes, China will be one of the most powerful countries this century, if not the first. One example is alternative energy, where China already leads in wind and solar energy, both in production and technology. While the US bankrupts itself defending its overseas oil supply.

We are going to be passed by if we don’t wise up.

I think it’s great that a little store like WalMart could lead to the rise of a nation like China.

I think their rise in a political sense is fine, nations rise and fall. They’re already one of the most powerful nations on earth, perhaps the most powerful if you consider the effect their sudden ceasing of exports would mean for the rest of the world or the volume of US debt they control. It’s the ecological aspects that worry me most though. They are consuming resources at a rapid clip and it’s getting faster. They won’t allow their access to be limited (Iran sanctions? only if the oil keeps flowing) and it won’t be a pretty site if they start running short of food, water, or power in the midst of their ascent.

Inevitable.

@ChaosCross no America would never attack another country just because it didn’t like it’s Politics, never, all the countries they bombed had it coming. China and America are mutually abhorrent, perhaps they could do the world a favour and negate each other.

Was that a sarcastic type of statement?

It is hard to say whether the rise of China is good or bad. So far, economic growth has helped their leaders legitimize the non-democratic political rule of the country. The big question is, what will happen when that economic growth slows down? (which will eventually happen) There is fear that China will use a more aggressive foreign policy in order to keep legitimizing their political system vis-a-vis their citizens. It is important for the West to continue to bring China into the global world order and make sure their rise will stay peaceful.

People are usually think the powerful country will be invasive .Ideology has become a glasses which we see other countries through it .I believe that different ideology bring different democracy. It is just like a pair of shoes ,only you yourself can know whether it fits or not.It depends on the footwear size of you,not others.Every country has its own condition and culture .We can not force one country’s democratic to another,it’s not fair.It is a kind willing to help Chinese achieve more right ,but it is on the premise that the Chinese want it and glad to accept it ,which fits China’s condition and culture.

Maybe China’s rise will be slowed if that Chinese tanker destroys Australia’s Great
Barrier Reef.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – A stranded Chinese coal ship leaking oil onto Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is an environmental time bomb with the potential to devastate large protected areas of the reef, activists said on Monday.

What bothers me most about China’s rise is the attitude in the U.S. that we are past our prime and that China will eventually take our place. I don’t say that it is not possible, but what is the cause of the pessimism? When the Russians got a headstart on us in the space race, the reaction was to gear up and overtake them. I do not recall many people saying that we did not stand a chance.

The only thing really negative aspect of the rise of China is that they aim toward having a standard of living comparable to American citizens and this means increasing industrialization beyond its already unsustainable level. The Chinese are, however, making huge investments in green technology. Maybe when they make their first major application of it, it will have the awakening effect of the Sputnik and get the U.S. to take irenewable energy more seriously.
