Can a broken nose cause head aches for years after?

Asked by yoshiboshi (359points) April 4th, 2010

So, this question is about my boyfriend. He broke his nose many years ago, I would say about 5 years ago or so. Not sure exactly. Well, he says that ever since then, he has had nose pain in his right nostril but none as severe as it is now. He slept on his right nostril one day, and all this pressure made it hard for him to breath afterward. Now, ever since that day, he has been getting this really bad head ache/pressure on the right side of his head, behind his eyes, ear, and into his right shoulder. He says it doesn’t throb or pulsate, but unsure if whether it is a migraine or not. It has been this way for weeks now, I would say. Nothing so far has alleviated his pain. It has been constant.

Any one out there can help to shed some light on this situation. He will see a doctor, but he’s gotta get some other things dealt with first.

I’m no ENT but it sounds like it’s connected to his sinuses in some way.

He may have a deviated septum from the earlier break. That can cause post-nasal drip and sinus problems. You can buy a littlebaby rubber syringe and squirt some warm saline solution into each nostril. ! teaspoon salt to 8 oz. warm water. (Remind him to lean over the sink.)

He actually thought of the deviated septum thing, but he isn’t certain of it. He thinks it may have deviated towards the right and is putting pressure on the right side, making it hard for him to breath from that side.

If the break wasn’t attended to by a physician, or was attended to without benefit of radiographs, it could have healed wrong. Among the complaints from misalignment are unnatural pressure on nerves. This could indeed be from the break,. But I have to caution that continual headaches could easily be an indication of something more serious that is undiagnosed. It really isn’t something to fuck around with. Please DO have your BF see an ENT. They need radiographs, among other things, and bloodwork, as well.

Yeah, we have considered that his head aches may be an indication of something else, but we are hoping it is not very serious. The sinus thing is just the first thing on the list the check off. Never heard of an ENT, but I will look into them right now.

Thanks all!

Hiya, I know this thread is really old now but I’ve been searching online as I have these exact symptoms and was wondering if you found out the cause of the problem?
