What is the proper technique for using Shimano rapid fire shifters on a bicycle?

My dad just picked up his bike today and would like to know how to shift gears on his bike using rapid fire shifters, or the proper technique for using Shimano rapid fire shifters on his bike :P

(sorry, he made me ask this :P)
Anybody know?

I’m not familiar with the Rapid Fire shifters, but if he picked up his bike from a decent bike shop then they should be able to tell/show him how they work.
