Why do my nails break?

Asked by shpadoinkle_sue (7188points) April 5th, 2010

For the longest time, my nails seem to break or peel. What I mean specifically is that a top layer will peel and then, because the nail is weaker, the rest will follow. My thumbnails and toenails never have this problem, it’s always the others. Am I not getting enough of a certain vitamin or is it something else?

I find that when I’m getting enough protein my nails are always in great shape.

Zinc and calcium are fairly important too I think.

I know what you mean!! D: I have that too. Hm, I do know vitamin E helps them a lot.

You should always wash your hands at least 3 times a day and always remember to moisturize them afterwards!!!

I have the same issue. I’ve found that using cuticle cream at night and moisturizing my hands a lot during the day, and keeping my nails very short really helps.
