What things can cause a fever?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) April 9th, 2010

I always assumed a fever was the body’s way of gearing up to fight off a bacterial infection. But…..are there other things that can cause a fever other than an infection?

The list is long, but don’t panic. If it persists, see your doc.

According to Peggy Lee

You give me fever
When you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever, In the morning
Fever all through the night

Listening to mainstream radio, with their play list of the 10 latest hits, all day long.

Seriously. I don’t know.

Doubt, guilt and microwave cooking perhaps?

Bacterial or viral infection, heat stroke, drug usage… The list goes on. You usually use other symptoms for diagnosis in conjunction with a “fever.”

@phoebusg (from your link)
* Hundreds of types of viruses, bacteria and parasites that cause many illnesses, such as upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, diarrhea and urinary tract infections
* Chronic (long-term) conditions associated with inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis
* Severe trauma, including surgery
* Reactions to medications or immunizations
* Certain types of cancers

That’s not really a long list. And I did ask my Doctor. I asked Dr. Rarebear. He said, “Your guess is as good as mine.” Pfffft!

FINE!
It’s probably a viral infection. Give him Tylenol or Advil. If it persists, or it goes over 104 take him in to be seen.

Menopause- quick fevers! ReaIly I think some cancers and brain diseases cause fevers.

@Val123 I’m guessing you’re ignoring the “hundreds of types”, it can be pretty important to know which one in order to treat it :P

Aren’t we supposed to leave fevers alone unless it goes too high?

thriftymaid's avatar

A lot of them. Virus, bacteria, parasites, sunburn, blood clots,

@Rarebear Too late! He’s healed! It was just weird to have a fever in conjunction with “growing pains” in his leg. Well, maybe not if he had a sudden onset of brain cancer, you know.

Rarebear's avatar

Brain cancers don’t cause fevers.

LOL!!
@faye Yeah, but this was like 104….
