How do I strenghten my will without exhuasting myself?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) April 9th, 2010

Sometimes I get tired and I sleep all day…other days I have energy and can read a textbook in one sitting…other days I don’t care about anything other than thinking about stuff that I don’t really care about…I think this is because I have lost my will or motivation to continue fighting(or living)…what do you do to strengthen your will to live?

It’s normal for a student. Eating has a big impact on this. Do you eat right?

talljasperman's avatar

@Lightning I eat whats in front of me… I just ate two pieces of chicken and some drank some root beer from a can in the fridge

Eating right, keeping a balanced sleeping schedule and staying fit should help.

@rahm_sahriv is right.—are you doing all three?

Maintaining healthy living habits is always helpful, as suggested by others.

If that doesn’t work, start by figuring out why you have “lost your will.” What is causing you to be unhappy on the days that you are unhappy?

Realize that they are not barriers- only excuses for not creating a happier outlook and situation.

Sometimes situations are out of our control. Accept them, and move forward.

Do something that you enjoy every day.

@Lightning Since I failed out of university I’ve become fat, unemployed, and I sleep all day…. I’ve lost so many dreams that I give up from time to time…I played too much video games and watched too much tv that I had to quit my job because of a disability… I only work in the summers but I hurt when I work….I just want to switch off and rest…But Now all I can do is rest

And, starting small with one goal to complete on a daily basis is a good way to build “endurance”. You can build upon it in time.

@talljasperman I just think “whats the point” and I go back to sleep for 16 hours and I wait for anwsers

The point is to gain contentedness in life. Its does sound like you’ve had a few hurdles to jump, and sometimes we just keep seeing more hurdles without an end. If you’ve made a conscious effort to enjoy your day to day living and have been unsuccessful, perhaps it’s time to talk to your doctor.

Forget the sharpie and use a typewriter.

My other answer was added just as a joke and a bad one at that.

Depression. no doctor here, but you have all the classic symptoms of being depressed. if you can see a psychiatrist, it will do you a world of good. your candle is just about burned out and its up to you to take the first step toward improving yourself.

I had a long, overly deep answer. But yeah, basic health is where to start. You can’t trust your negative feelings when you’re body is shit. Diet disorders are more subtle than other substance abuses. It’s not a single chemical that you are addicted to. There’s so much psychology around food, on top of the physical stuff. I think the trick is in first making sure that your food is of good quality. Make things that are delicious, not because they’re overloaded with cheap calories, but because they’re naturally tasty without that shit. Once you have a diet that allows you to appreciate food, you can focus more on losing weight. Nutrition is so fundamental, everything in a person’s life is effected by it strongly.

If you want proof as to how fucked up society is, just look at how this world handles its food. We produce more than can be eaten, yet over a billion starve. We understand the science of nutrition, yet we constantly poison ourselves. Be one of the few who truly understand how valuable healthy nutrition is and protect it.

You do seem to be depressed. You report a combination of moods, attitudes and physical manifestations that are consistent with depression. I advise you to seek assessment and treatment before these problems spin out of control.

Focus your money and time on diet and general livelihood before you go to a shrink. They usually aren’t there to heal you, but to adjust you. At least handle the basic stuff before you seek professional help. Then again, if you feel absolutely crushed constantly and can’t get anything in order, go ahead.

I don’t have access to professional help… My calls don’t get returned because the system has given up on me(or the councilors are buzy)... I’m on my own…I only have my mother and Fluther

Let your day be simple and your life complex. What I mean is, face the day just as it is and deal with it as best as you can. Leave tomorrow and the days after that as open as possible. What you do today is not what defines your life, it’s just what you happen to be doing for now—it’s not without meaning but that meaning doesn’t matter much if you don’t believe it does.

@talljasperman Get yourself a copy of Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy by Dr. David Burns. It talks about how you can learn to fight these problems on your own. There is an available workbook that will help you progress through the process.
