What are your thoughts about the airplane accident that killed Poland's president and many ministers?

Asked by phoebusg (5251points) April 10th, 2010

Looking at the list of victims makes me wonder about this accident.
Also the fact that he was flying to Russia to commemorate the killings of polish by the soviets. I find this both ironic and perhaps not so accidental… and if it is, it’s almost twice as ironic.

That said, my condolences to the families of the lost.

From the BBC article. This was a preventable crash, which is very sad.

“Polish and Russian officials said no-one survived after the plane apparently hit trees as it approached Smolensk airport in thick fog.

Russian media reports said the pilots ignored advice from air traffic control to divert to another airport.

I am Polish born now livin in US, I know what’s up that mass media hides. Russians never wanted to admit of polish officers/inteligencia massacre in Katyn. President of Poland wanted Russia to admit, he was pro-amercan, on the other han. Donald Tusk the prime minister was budy budy with Russians, I think Russia wants to change Polands ’ psy social politics, elect those who are pro Russia and silence Katyn massacre. Check ‘Katyn’ the movie it’s in your local Blackbuster.

@BabylonFree thanks for the inside info.

@gailcalled why would you use an airport without a cleared perimeter in the first place? Sounds fishy, or a bad decision before the flight itself.

Anyways as Polish National Anthem goes… ‘Jeszcze Polska Nie ZgineƂa’ meaning Poland Has Not Yet Perished.

Well, at least Sickipedia gets new material…

They have used an ancient soviet aeroplane. That plus pilot incompetence.
I do not see any sign of foul play, why would they risk that over a country of limited importance like poland? But hey, it is big bad soviet union, so they MUST be responsible.

Whenever a hig ranking politcal official dies in an airplan accident, you have to investiagte sabotage.

If you’re asking if this was an assassination, there’s not enough data to prove that yet.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

I am generally opposed to airplane crashes on principle.

phoebusg's avatar

@Captain_Fantasy agreed, and it’s more than one:

@ragingloli You do not see any signs of foul play !!???
Well,I had no idea you were in the investigative team, how nice of you to take time off and log on to Fluther to give us your preliminary findings !

I dunno…my question would be ‘Why even ask this question?

There is no way to ever truly speculate and know anything for certain.

It’s just mind stuff, getting caught up in sensationalism, the ever pervasive conspiracy theories.

Plane crashes happen, sometimes it’s just as simple as that.

No big hidden agenda, and as far as pilot error goes, well duh…humans make mistakes.

The plane crashed, there are no survivors, end of story.

Seek's avatar

I only have to ask, why the hell did they have that many important people on one plane? Haven’t they ever seen “La Bamba”?

phoebusg's avatar

@Coloma because it is a very ironic event if you consider all the details. Maybe we can learn something from it. It’s not necessary that there is a conspiracy, but this is quite the event for a country of 38 million.

And yeah, why stuff everyone in that one plane :( Why use a plane even, it’s not that far.

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr I think that was the in flight movie !

plethora's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr That’s the real question here…why practically the entire govt on one plane?

malevolentbutticklish's avatar

Kim Jong-il doesn’t fly for a reason.

rahm_sahriv's avatar

Exactly @Seek_Kolinahr . Why that many people on one plane? Who in their right mind would put that many officials on one plane. Not sure how succession works within the Polish government, but hopefully none of those on board were next in line.

I am suspicious enough to allow the though of foul play to stay in my mind. I can’t help it when I hear that Putin is going to personally investigate. Of course that is coming from someone old enough to remember the Cold War although it was cooling as I was growing up. I honestly have to say there will be a tiny part of me that is always suspicious of the Russians.

rahm_sahriv's avatar

And I should clarify- I am not so much suspicious of individual Russians, but their government.

Everyone knew that plane was not in the best condition, including the President (start under “Controversial figure”). It’s too bad that the choice to use it this time was a fatal one.

What struck me when I read of it from the start was why would the President think it was OK for so many high-ranking officials to be on one plane? It seems unwise to me to allow that, at any rate. I’d’ve had everyone take different commercial flights.

TexasDude's avatar

It’s terribly sad.

What a tragedy. It is unprecedented for a nation to lose its political and intellectual elite twice.
