What reality show would you create and how would it help other people?

Asked by Vunessuh (16727points) April 11th, 2010

With all the reality shows out there today, I’m surprised more aren’t targeted toward helping other people. Most of them seem to be just strictly for entertainment, which is all fine and dandy, but I can always appreciate a very selfless reality show.
These days, we have rich celebrities getting paid thousands to allow cameras to document their lives: Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Giuliana and Bill, Fantasia for Real, Let’s Talk About Pep, Brooke Knows Best, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, The Girl’s Next Door, Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, Kell on Earth, The Hills, etc.
We have the ’strangers picked to live in a house’ shows like The Bad Girls Club, Big Brother and The Real World.
And who could forget all of the many bachelor/dating shows like Rock of Love, I Love New York, Date My Mom, Parental Control, Blind Date, Flavor of Love, Room Raiders, For the Love of Ray J, The Bachelor/The Bachelorette, etc.
Then there are reality shows that end up being hoaxes like Punk’d, The Joe Schmo Show and My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance.
I also find shows like For The Love of Money, where they allow obnoxious people the chance to win thousands, quite irritating.
And while I find shows like America’s Next Top Model, So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, Project Runway, Top Chef, Shear Genius, Survivor, The Amazing Race, The Apprentice, etc. to be fun and entertaining, they really only help one person’s dreams come true and/or put cash in one contestant’s pocket throughout the entire season, (since they are elimination shows.)

I’m starting to notice that most reality shows geared toward improving as many lives as possible, aren’t broadcasted on the most popular networks.
Here are a list of the types of selfless shows I’m talking about.

Intervention (helping people with severe addictions)
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (giving better homes/living conditions to deserving people)
Hoarders (explores the psychology behind compulsive hoarding and gives professional help and guidance to those who are hoarders.)
The Biggest Loser (improving the health and lifestyle of people who are overweight)
Animal Cops (women and men who rescue sick and abused animals and fight for justice on their behalf)

If you were personally responsible for creating a new reality show, what would it be about and how would it improve the live’s of other people? Does this show happen to have any personal relevance to yourself?

The show doesn’t necessarily have to be incredibly heroic or anything. You can choose one that helps people and perhaps another just for fun. It’s up to you.

I would love to see/create a reality show that acts like a watchdog for congress and the senate. It would tell you exactly what has been voted on, who voted which way and which lobbyists they were seen with. If I could manage it, I’d report on who has taken money from whom.
What are the odds?

God’s Law. Get a bunch of fundamentalist Christians and force them to obey all of the laws in the Bible, including the ones in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. If you break a law you’re off the show. Or else possibly stoned to death by other contestants who would be trying to follow the laws as well.

It would help fundamentalist Christians get over their religion.

I’d watch God’s Law!

@Qingu
I’d watch that show religiously.
Oh, God, please forgive me for the pun.

@Qingu Hollywood needs you! NOW!

I’d get a group of people to come to a city they’ve never been to and try to survive as homeless people for 3 months. No one contestant would know who any other one was. Each contestant would have to start out with $20 and some second-hand clothes, no ID, and a map. Real homeless people can apply for a place on the show as well as non-homeless people.

Culture Shock.
Have Americans live in a foreign city for a few weeks with almost no resources.
Most of us really need to be more world-conscious because America is generally so secluded and protected.

Media Swap – Liberals have to watch conservative (read Fox) shows and read conservative blogs for a week, and conservatives have to watch and read liberal news. Then they get together and discuss issues from the other side’s perspective and see if they can come up with “bipartisan” solutions.

There are plenty of amazing documentaries that could have been reality TV shows. And, come to think of it, all the good reality TV shows would probably have been better as documentaries—well I guess that’s what they are just in weekly snippets.

I’d like to see a show following schoolteachers from different countries. Each season could be a different age group of students. I think that would be interesting. What teacher and class of young children don’t have stories to tell? People don’t pay nearly enough attention to education. Which is pathetic, because it is obviously the most important part of society. . . It will never happen, or if it does it will be over dramatized and miss the point.

My reality show would require that an indoor stadium be built, along the same dimensions as most NBA venues. The entire playing area, again let’s go with NBA dimensions, will be enclosed with ultra clear, triple thick, bullet proof glass. As spectators watch from the stands and folks at home tune in to HD closed circuit tv, a group of 100 chimps, that have been dosed with pharmaceutical grade LSD, will be released into the play area. The play area will contain a vast array of loaded firearms, grenades, ninja swords, live electrical wires, and other implements of violence.

An ever changing group of celebrity guests will run live commentary and gambling is not only allowed, it is encouraged. Did I mention that every week a couple of death row inmates will join the fray and battle for their freedom?

How will this help other people? Why, by it’s sheer fucking awesomeness.

In England there’s a show called The Secret Millionaire. They have a look around a community in need of help & decide who is deserving of financial assistance. These range from youth hostels, care homes for the elderly & drug clinics for addicts trying to kick their habit.I personally think this works well as it helps those most in need & promotes good comunity spirit vital in failing disadvantaged areas. So yeah nothing original i’m afraid but that’s my pick.

@Blondesjon sick puppy show! Sort of like “Jacob’s Ladder” with chimps.

There was a nice little-known movie about chimps taking over a Florida space research lab with help of employee after one of their central figures gets brain nuked. Their escape explains wild monkeys in certain part5s of Florida. It was fun. wish I remembered movie title—I’d watch it again.

I would like to see a show that covers the daily lives of people who aren’t famous and who don’t do things that make them gobs of money. The life of a wood worker or a nurse or an administrative assistant or whatever. Something that really is about real life, not some kind of pseudo jacked up real life.

In my “homeless show” the winner would receive a mortgage-free property—if that person happened to already have a home c’est la vie. So sell it or give it to a homeless buddy.

C-SPAN is one of the best reality shows. People learn how to debate.
