(Yes, yes, I've procrastinated.) Can you help me with a TurboTax question re: new car credit?

Asked by syz (36034points) April 11th, 2010

I’m trying to claim the new car credit, but Turbo Tax is asking me for “taxes paid”. I have all of my purchase documents here, and I can’t find anything that is designated ‘taxes’. I did not pay cash for the car, I got a loan. Do I still qualify? How can I find the information? Thanks, guys>

It would appear that the requested input is any tax that you have already paid on the vehicle, such as sales tax or (perhaps) a registration fee that is based on the value of the vehicle (which is a form of tax). I would find it difficult to believe that your state charges neither of those things.

But don’t sweat if you don’t have your answer in time. Just file an extension request instead of your tax return by April 15, and the first extension is automatic.

As part of the USA stimulus package, taxpayers will be able to deduct the both local and state sales tax paid on new car purchases up to $49,500. The tax break will cover the purchase of any new car, domestic or foreign, through the end of 2009. Additionally, the deduction is “above the line,” which means that it reduces the amount of a filer’s taxable income. Eligible taxpayers must have an annual income below $125,000 for individuals or below $250,000 for families.

Even if you financed your car purchase with a loan. The sale price was taxed by the dealer and has been included in your loan payment calculation. Review your Bill of Sale again, it should list on it the tax(es) paid, but you can only enter the amount pertaining to Local and State Sales taxes. Registration fee is not included in that entry.
