Where can I market my services as a copy editor? I'm still working on my undergrad- how much should I charge?
I’m working on my undergrad in journalism, am the editor in chief at my student newspaper and am well on my way to the level of hyper-fluency necessary to be a professional copy editor.
In the meantime, I am really, really good at what I do, but I have to take into consideration that:
1) I don’t have my bachelor’s degree yet
2) I don’t want to be the Wal-mart of copy editors
I look forward to this community’s responses!

Contact independent web and print designers. Maybe even offer services to big agencies but it’s easier with the independents. Everyone of them I know uses copy editors on a regular basis. Everyone of them is looking for a deal to keep their project on budget.
Craislist is a start.
I don’t know how much to charge, it depends alot on where you live. I would post a note at the Student Union. When I was in college I would have loved to have someone find all my spelling and grammar errors.
Well, this may be carping, but I would say “undergraduate degree” and I would use hyphens in editor-in-chief.
And I do not understand what either “the Wal-mart of copy editors“or “hyper-fluency” means. (Plus, it’s Walmart, officially.)
Oh hey, gailcalled, for the record “editor in chief” and “editor-in-chief” are both correct.
I’ve seen it “Wal-mart” and “Walmart.”
Anyway, what I mean by it is… I don’t want to unfairly undercut the competition.
I asked a similar question over here.———->
Several Flutherites gave helpful answers, so I encourage you to check it out.
@gailcalled It’s actually Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (branded as Walmart). :-)
My sincere apologies. Go thou and sow the hyphen, with my blessings.
:) Sorry for being kind of rude about how I explained the “editor in chief” thing. I guess I’m a touch defensive…
