Are there any recent discoveries in the areas of Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Depression?

Asked by Ame_Evil (3051points) April 13th, 2010

This thread is inspired by another thread which linked a newly discovered “Type 3 Diabetes” with Alzheimers. I was wondering if there were any breakthroughs in the other psychological disorders mentioned above in the last 5–10 years.

The reasons for this thread is I want to find recent evidence as my textbooks and current research is old (pre 2005) and searching for up to date stuff is meeting dead ends. I am appealing to you Fluthers as I hope that maybe a few of you have discovered breaking research that I haven’t been lucky enough to be exposed to.

Thanks.

/edit In fact my most recent research is from 2005 so anything later than that would be ace and worthy of kudos.

How about schizophrenia and bipolar disorder? They share some overlap in their genetic susceptibility loci. There is also research relating diabetes, mental illnesses such as bipolar and schizophrenia and depression.

Have you access to any specialized databases? I would try PubMed or PsychNow if you can get them and search for recent peer-reviewed articles.

Will check these suggestions out tomorrow when I have time. Thanks guys.

@talljasperman I assume you mean the study focusing on catecholomethyl transferase by Caspi et al (2005). I already have that one in my repertoire :).

There are new medications that can prevent the neural bundles, which appear on neurons and cause Alzheimers. I can’t get any references right now, but I read it in my textbook
