Apple's iPad versus the Amazon Kindle (see question details).

Asked by Bluefreedom (22947points) April 14th, 2010

I’m a loyal Kindle owner although I think the iPad is a neat little gadget. My question is this, if Amazon’s Kindle is going to compete with the iPad, why would Amazon offer a Kindle application to put on the iPad in the first place?

I was on Amazon’s product page the other day and saw this. I can see the application for PC’s, laptops, iPhones, and Blackberry’s but why would they offer it to their direct and newest competition in the e-book market?

There is more competition than Kindle vs Ipad, what you are refferring to is Amazon vs IBooks.
The hardware is a small marginal one time profit, if at all, while the buying of the books is a constant stream of cash. We all know that Amazon takes a loss on best sellers but it profits highly from second print editions and education. So for Amazon would they love to have everyone on a Kindle using their bookstore, absolutely. But if someone is going to buy an Ipad and would like to buy books from Amazon why not give them the avenue to do so?

Amazon doesn’t just make money off the actual Kindle device. They also make money from the purchase of Kindle-formatted books. Why wouldn’t they want to get some money from iPad owners?

No one on earth who’s considering buying an iPad is going to decide not to simply because it doesn’t have a Kindle application. Not when there are so many other eBook formats available. It would be the height of absurdity to not offer a Kindle for iPad application.

There’s more money to be made from book sales than from gadget sales. In the future, you may see deals like mobile phone companies have. Example: sign up to receive 2 books a month and we’ll throw in a Kindle.

All the “book reading” technology is a rip-off IMHO, not including iPad which we all know does more than display text. Things like the Kindle and Nook all use extremely low end technology, in fact I purchased a watch from Taiwan a few years ago that has the same technology as the Kindle and it only cost $60.

My point in all of this is I have always felt that while the Kindle represents a good idea, it feels too much like a rip-off with how grossly over priced it is. On the other hand the iPad has reading features on top of gaming, web surfing, email, music storage, etc. which makes it the clear winner over Kindle in my eyes.

Try reading a book on iPad for one hour and also try it on Kindle.

For serious readers, Kindle and other ebook readers remain better choices.

@boxing. I haven’t seen or used an iPad yet but if the Kindle application for it is like the one for the PC’s and laptops, the pages don’t look like the e-ink pages on the Kindle making it harder on the eyes when looking at the screens for long durations of time.
