Apple's iPad versus the Amazon Kindle (see question details).

I’m a loyal Kindle owner although I think the iPad is a neat little gadget. My question is this, if Amazon’s Kindle is going to compete with the iPad, why would Amazon offer a Kindle application to put on the iPad in the first place?

I was on Amazon’s product page the other day and saw this. I can see the application for PC’s, laptops, iPhones, and Blackberry’s but why would they offer it to their direct and newest competition in the e-book market?
