How will the live television debates affect the 2010 elections in the UK?

Asked by JeffVader (5426points) April 15th, 2010

Bsically, if your not aware, we’re having a series of leadership debates similar to those in America. This is the first time we’ve done this & the debates will include the leaders of all 3 main parties Labour, Conservative, & Liberal Democrat.

It interrupts the proper news. We put sky news on last night and that was all we got so we went to bed.

JeffVader's avatar

@Dibley Hehehe, I’m not expecting them to be thrilling I must say.

Sophief's avatar

Seriously though, I don’t think it make any difference. It makes them think they are important, but that’s about it.

If your country is anything like ours, they’ll waste a bunch of time telling lies and slandering each other. And you’ll miss the best bits of all your favorite programs.

JeffVader's avatar

@Dibley I am rather hoping either Brown or Cameron say something either insulting, or monumentally stupid….

TheOnlyException's avatar

Wow, I didn’t know this.. ah, its always fun to see Mr. Brown make an arse of himself, a more likely event on live television..
Even pet shops are getting political
A squeaky dog toy I saw yesterday.

please don’t ask me why I hang around pet shops taking photographs because I really cannot say haha

Sophief's avatar

@Trillian That is pretty much what is happening.

@JeffVader Again, trying to make themselves look good.

@TheOnlyException One way to pass the time!

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Hahahaha, you’re bonkers…. in a good way :)

TheOnlyException's avatar

@Dibley glad you see it my way! :)
@JeffVader so I’ve been told..hehe :)

I don’t know if it will be as exciting or entertaining as when the PM has his regular Q&A with Parliament! From an American point of view that looks downright rowdy!

It’s fun to handicap debates. You try to guess who the general public will see as the winner. It’s all about body language and composure. The issues—well, you need sound bites, not data. They have to be convincing sound bites, too.

Otherwise, if you’re like me and you know who you are going to vote for already, it’s not all that interesting. If you’re apathetic, it’s not all that interesting. If you’re not going to vote, it’s not all that interesting. And, if you are going to make a choice based on a debate instead of researching your candidates, you deserve who you get.

TheOnlyException's avatar

@wundayatta that is what I thought. People who have already made up their minds cannot be arsed to watch a live debate, it is simply a matter of going and voting when the time comes, maybe the odd banner in the window at most if they really feel like getting a flaming bag of dog turd left on their doorstep but not much else precedes it. Most people like to act more politically minded than they really are, but half of them don’t know shit about the party they are supporting or why. I know a load of people planning to vote labour because ‘it seems like the thing to do’, no mention of the policies of that particular party.

I wouldn’t expect much of a live debate in any case as the propaganda I have seen is amusingly childish.
things like this

are what I’ve seen so far. Using a photo of him that makes him look like the village idiot.
Just another dull, bitchy political ad that 99% of people will totally ignore.

and this

okay no not really for that last one but would ya be suprised ;) hehe

Don’t get me wrong I’m no fan of Gordon Brown, but the Tories are treating the voting public like 5 year olds.

sandystrachan's avatar

It will show everyone that they shouldn’t vote those parties , instead everyone will vote BNP .
Disclaimer i am not a member of BNP and would NEVER vote BNP , BUT some of what they stand for is true its just a shame they can’t put their point across properly .

TheOnlyException's avatar

@sandystrachan now theres a terrifying prospect. will be on the first plane out of here if that happens thank you very much

JeffVader's avatar

@sandystrachan Yes, they dont put their point accross properly, in exactly the same way the Nazi’s failed…..

mattbrowne's avatar

This morning German reporters said Gordon Brown lost the debate.

JeffVader's avatar

@mattbrowne Yeh, that seems to be the consensus of opinion. He tried to be less dour than normal & even cracked a few jokes, unfortunately it was like watching ur dad dance at a disco, slightly creepy….. happily my guy, Nick Clegg came out on top….. not that it’ll help the cause though.

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader unfortunately it was like watching ur dad dance at a disco, slightly creepy…..

HAHAHA nice

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Hehe, have you ever seen someone look so uncomfortable in public though :)

mattbrowne's avatar

@JeffVader – You think David Cameron is ready to lead the UK?

JeffVader's avatar

@mattbrowne No…. but I fear he’s going to be given the chance….. I vote Lib Dem.

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader hahaha no I know, the worst feeling is being embarrassed for someone, cos you want to hug them but kick em in the head all at once! conflicting i tell you..

But that analogy was perfect! haha

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Many thanks :) I’ve been feeling particularly colourful these last few days :) Must say, I’m finding it hilarious that Gordo has fallen into 3rd place….

One of the most interesting phenomena which has developed over the last 20 years is the “political television event” drinking game. There are many variations. My favorite (especially for debates) is to take sides, each contestant choosing one debater. The opponents choose key words (e.g., GW Bush’s pronunciation of “nuclear” as “nuc-u-lar”). Every time a debater says a key word, the contestant supporting that candidate consumes an alcoholic beverage (usually a shot of whiskey, rum, or other strong liquor). The winner of the debate is determined by the last contestant standing.

JeffVader's avatar

@Yetanotheruser I love it!!!!!! Know what Im doing Thursday :)

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader More irritated by the fact he was in a position to fall in the first place
haha can’t find a single supporter for G.B. among anyone and everyone I’ve asked, full of Lib Dems and Tories and the odd Green Party supporter.. and i mean odd

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Hahahahahaha, now that’s not fair…. just because they think a Caesar Salad deserves the same rights as you or I doesn’t make them odd…... actually, it does doesn’t it :)

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader hahahaha just a bit :)
I just love their little slogan “Help elect Britain’s first Green MPs”

ooh er. Guess the aliens are among us after all.
Trying to take over the British Goverment… what cheek!

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Hahaha…. damn those little green men…. You can just imagine their election manifesto. ‘We pledge to mass probe the nation’.... thanks, but no thanks :)

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader ahahaha honestly best one I’ve heard yet! Beats the crap out of a lot of the campaign material I’ve seen so far hehe
Wouldn’t put it past the British Public to elect an alien government hahaha damn sight better than the BNP any day ;)

TheOnlyException's avatar

Oh and another thing I just heard.
“This volcano has stopped more immigrants in 2 days than labour in 12 years.”

ahahaha

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Hahahaha….. who on earth said that? & I’m right with you, I’d much prefer Chewbacca in No.10 than Nick ‘racist b*stard’ Griffin anyday!

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader Hahahahahaha! nicely said :)
At least chewbacca would be useful in making the rest of the population seem a lot less hairy in comparison haha
And I don’t know who came up with the volcano thing but it’s fantastic! hahaha

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Hehehehe….. indeed, some of the types walking around where I live do look a little bit Yeti :)
It is fantastic isn’t it…..

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader Hahaha tell me about it :)
Oh the urge to throw a wad of sticky gum at them…

What do you give a seasick yeti?
Plenty of room
(Didn’t feel complete without the bad joke hehe)

TheOnlyException's avatar

the hope not hate campaign against the BNP. you came to mind because they mentioned Eddie Izzard being at this day of action (the one responsible for your brilliant profile story! haha) :)

JeffVader's avatar

@TheOnlyException Thanks for that… I’ve book marked the page so I remember to read it all properly (memory like a sieve). You’re a little diamond :)

TheOnlyException's avatar

@JeffVader ah yes so I’ve been told :) hehe you’re very welcome!
