What steps can you take when someone has stolen a check of yours and cashed it?

Landlord didn't get the rent this month, and then we noticed that someone had cashed our rent check. Are we protected, or are we out that money??

Who cashed check? And what bank permitted it? You're going to have to do some sleuthing. (Did you mail check to landlord?)
