I smell smoke, when there is no smoke around.

Every now and then I smell smoke, and there is no smoke. Nobody else smells it. Sometimes it is very strong, to the point of burning the nasal passages. It may last a few hours or a few days at a time. Does anybody know how to get rid of it or what causes it? I ask, because I have been experiencing it for a few days now. It makes it hard to concentrate.

No one else has ever smelled the smoke when this happens? <—- That’s an important question to answer, because serious medical issues can create phantom smells. If this is happening to you, and you’re sure no one else ever smells it, you need to make a doctor’s appointment asap.
Have a read here.
And, I agree with DD, get to a doctor and get checked out ASAP.
@DrasticDreamer Yes, I agree, with a new doctor. I have had this for about 3 years. My other doctor said he had no idea. I googled I smell smoke and found out there are a lot of people out there with the same thing, and don’t know anymore than I do about it. Hopefully my new doctor will. I was hoping to find someone else with this issue that could tell me more. Not that I want anybody to have it mind you.
I also wonder, if real smoke can damage your lungs, why can’t phantom smoke? If I can feel burning in my nasal passages, why wouldn’t my lungs suffer as well? It even makes me cough, just like I would if I was stand near a campfire.
alright…edited and removed by me
@earthduzt This is not funny. Would you like to have it as a gift. I would be happy to hand it over.
Well… I know that sometimes tumors can create phantom smells. Not necessarily the same smell for everyone. There was someone famous once, a writer I think, who began to smell burning feathers. No one else ever smelled it, and he later died from a brain tumor, which was pushing on a specific part of the brain and thus causing the smell. That said, I’m far from being an expert in this area – but I know that really bad things can cause phantom smells… So to be on the safe side, I would really talk to a doctor ASAP.
It may be time to pay the piper. Remember that contract years ago….had to be signed in blood?...ring a bell?
@SeventhSense I’m sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about.
@Rangie @SeventhSense is making a funny (I hope). He’s alluding to a source of the smell of smoke. Brimstone. The deal you made with the devil. Get it? Ha ha?
@jjmah Thank you for the link. I just finished reading it. It was very informative and I will check further. It made me think of 20 years ago I went to an acupunture doctor, and I also had hypnosis around the same time. I quit smoking immediately. To this day I cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke, or the smell left on someone that has been smoking. However, this smoke that I smell is not cigarette smoke. It more like a smoldering campfire.
@wundayatta . Thanks for the clarification. But, I am seriously looking for some information. Perhaps I should have put that in my Q.
@earthduzt Thank you, I sincerely appreciate that gesture. I really hate having this and would love to get rid of it. I have enough issues to deal with, but this one I don’t even know what to do. As I sit here wheezing as I speak.

@SeventhSense I don’t know who you think you are, but if you read the previous, you would know I quit smoking 20 years ago. I am having trouble breathing as we speak. I have emphysema,COPD w/asthma, now why would I want to light a cigarette?
@Rangie
No offense. I didn’t say to smoke one. Just smell the smoke and when it’s removed it will be less intense maybe.
@SeventhSense no better, damage done. I am now tearful and my husband said to get off of the computer.
@Rangie
Oh wow. I never intended that. Carry on
Phantom smells can be a symptom of several things. Talk to you doctor about this.
MODS
My first answer was quite serious.
@Rangie
OK here’s a serious answer because I don’t want to see you cry again and my violin has to be restrung anyway. I don’t know what your neurological history is but imagined smells, tastes sights and sounds are often connected to partial seizures and whether they are a precursor to a seizure or have been in your past, they are most certainly neurological in origin as are all hallucinations:
Sensory seizures:
These cause changes in any one of the senses. People with sensory seizures may smell or taste things that aren’t there; hear clicking, ringing, or a person’s voice when there is no actual sound; or feel a sensation of “pins and needles” or numbness. Seizures may even be painful for some patients. They may feel as if they are floating or spinning in space. They may have visual hallucinations, seeing things that aren’t there (a spot of light, a scene with people). They also may experience illusions—distortions of true sensations. For instance, they may believe that a parked car is moving farther away, or that a person’s voice is muffled when it’s actually clear.

P.S.-If a couple of quips brought you to tears you may want to rethink going into public forums or firm up that epidermis.
@SeventhSense It isn’t solely due to this thread. Rangie has been bashed on other threads, including a jelly gang bang. It tends to have a cumulative effect on the psyche, no? We’ve been watching this happen from behnd the scenes over and over again for a week now. We’re working on a solution that will fix this permanently.
Sometimes it’s a generational thing. I don’t know how old she is. Maybe she’s just not used to this“irreverent generation.” I came from my own so I’m used to it.
@We’ve taken that into consideration as well. That is part of it. It does not, however, absolve others from their behavior.
@SeventhSense I have taken a breather, and decided to approach you with an apology of my own. You threw a little firecracker and I jumped. The Q, was not hypothetical. This is something I have been trying to find answers to, with 2 different doctors. They really, don’t know. There could be many causes. I now have a new doctor which I will be working with to see if we an discover just what the cause is. The fact that I also suffer from COPD w/asthma and emphysema, your remark about, it might be time to pay the piper, didn’t exactly touch my heart. I was very offended and somewhat frightened at the future. And then to top it off with go light a cigarette, was the last I could handle. I was already having a bad health day, and for someone to suggest to me to go light a cigarette, which was half the reason I am in this position I am in today, well, need I say more. I didn’t even stop to think that you don’t know me, or of my medical conditions other than what I said in the thread. Then with that earthduzt person with his/her remarks. You guys sent me into tears. You are right, I don’t understand this irreverent generation. But quite honestly that is no excuse. Nevertheless, I extend my hand to you and acceptance of your apology. I am 67, happily married and not physically well. Not your fault. I have only been on Fluther, not quite a month, and have been eaten for lunch. hehe It’s a new day, what do you say?
@Rangie
I never hold a grudge and I wish you only the best of health and success in your endeavor. Fear not. You’ll get through this and you’ll find peace.
