Learn to relax your diaphragm so that when the cardio becomes strenuous, your lungs will continue to be able to fully expand, making the oxygen exchange most efficient.

My cross-country running coach taught me how to accomplish this: inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. There’s actually something very zen about it as well. Practice this type of breathing while you’re out walking, biking, etc. and as it becomes more natural you will be able to maintain that balance when you exercise as well.

And don’t forget to stretch!

Breathing will come easier with better conditioning. You could also try using the diaphram muscles to assist your breathing.

Breathe Rite strips will help open your airways. This will give you better airflow. I was surprised by how much they helped the first time I wore them.

When running long distances it’s better to drop your arms down by your side ocassionally, also take regular deep breaths in through your nose & out of your mouth.Works for me.

Don’t follow my example. I’m the fool who smokes cigarettes while running 10Ks

Whilst you run, take slow deep breaths and try to control your breathing. Also dont run too much of a long distance if you are now starting. Run to a far point, where you are almost out of breath and only run up to that distance until your stamina improves.

This is what works for me. I breathe in rhythm – 2 breaths in from nose 1 out. Rhythm changes as the speed changes.

Make sure you’re breathing into your diaphragm rather than your lungs. Put your hand on your stomach and feel it expand as you’re running.

Slow down. If you’re getting badly out of breath, you’re running too fast.

Try breathing in for three steps, out for two.

Deep-breathing exercises when not running can also help.
