How do you find out if your flight has been delayed/canceled?
Due to the volcano eruption in Iceland many flights to Europe have been canceled or delayed. Does anyone know how to find out direct status? If your put in your flight info into many airline sites nothing of result comes up. The phone lines are jammed and I don’t know what to do next. Traveling to the airport only to wait 24+ hrs is something to be avoided!! suggestions?

Check the airline’s website.
Print your boarding pass. If you can’t print it you know the flight is canceled. This may not tell you about delays but many of the flights were canceled so you are still likely to get valuable information.
Here’s an update from my friend in London.
8 EDT (7 GMT):
I will hold this 2nd report until the East coast gets up. As of 7 am UK airspace closed until 6pm Sunday.
¾th of all European airspace closed.
10am – all UK grounded until at least 1 am (BST) Monday.
maybe some Shetland-Orkney flights this evening (i.e. northern).
13:00 (BST) BA cancels all Monday flights.
I use the following method:
1) Wake up late
2) Hurriedly pack up last few remaining items
3) Yell at everyone to get in the car because we’re going to be late
4) Try and find my toothbrush again
5) Begin drive to airport and get stuck in traffic
6) Keep eyeing up the clock in the belief that it’ll slow down time
7) Get to the airport and yank bags out of car, forgetting one.
8) Assure person who drove me that I’ll be fine and they can go ahead and leave
9) Stand in really long line tapping foot, in the belief that it slows down time.
10) Check bags then go over to Security line
11) Stand in security line, bouncing up and down in impatience.
12) Get to metal detector, walk through, go back and remove another article of clothing
13) Goto 12 until nearly nude
14) Find out terminal is on other side of airport
15) Pretend I’m OJ Simpson and run through airport, thereby attracting attention of Homeland Security
16) Get to gate with 30 seconds to spare
17) Look at board and see that flight was delayed and/or canceled.
Or, you can call the airline or check the website.
Here’s update #3 from my London friend.. It doesn’t sound promising.
“Sunday 15:00 (BST). No fly extended to 7 am Monday. Transport minister, Lord Adonis, BBC world interview, all EU airlines obliged to care for passengers.
EU ministers video conference tomorrow. More ground transport being laid on.
UK nationals turned down by airlines should contact Foreign Office, contact details via web site fco.gov.uk.
Test flight being prepared at Heathrow.”
John Cleese reportedly took a 932 mile tax ride from Oslo to Brussels to the tune of over $5100. He could have tried walking, of course. One of a dozen sources.
use bing.com and type in the flight number (should be on the ticket), simplest way I can think of.
I really reccomend you callling your airline!
My English friends are stuck in Florida for a whole extra week. They were due to fly home yesterday; first flight hey could book was for next Saturday!
@janbb There are some exceptions – try booking with a ‘reciprocal’ airline if possible, or the Red Cross is trying to help those who are stuck.
@janbb: I couldn’t imagine being a week late back to work. This is a disaster.
I just had a good friend cancel a very expensive trip to London and Turkey for two. British Airways (probably overwhelmed) was uncooperative and oafish.
I will never fly anywhere again.
