Fast forward, we're ready to colonize Mars... Do you go?
Let’s say we’ve figured out how to get people to Mars and are ready to start a colony there. It has been Terraformed to a certain extent, but it will still be quite a struggle, of course, the differences in gravity alone will take some adjustments. Do you volunteer to go? If so, what special skills can you provide to the young Earth 2? How do you think the colony will fare? Who do you bring with you? Tell me your story.

I would want to go, but probably wouldn’t go. I would hope someone I knew would go so they could tell me what it is like. Then I would go. I would take someone I didn’t care for, in case it was dangerous, I wouldn’t want to put someones life in danger I loved.
Calling it a colonization effort implies that it’s probably pretty safe. I’d want to at least visit.
I am physically strong (moreso in Mars’ low gravity), technically inclined, sound of mind, cheerful, highly adaptive, and have read both Heinlein’s Red Planet and Bova’s Mars.
I think since most of the air composition aspects of mars is mostly CO², I’d imagine a botanist with lots of water might fare well in a green house environment. I think it would take much longer to make an area of the planet inhabitable, before we could start colonizing.
To be honest, I’d rather live on Titan.

Before I hit the spaceways, I want to see 3 manned spacecraft makes it to Mars and set up shop without anyone dying.
Once there, all I would need would be a single carry-on bag with some clothes and a laptop. I would want to stay in touch with my earthbound contacts.
I’d go, but I wouldn’t bring any red shirts with me. :-)
No. Only men can live on Mars. If I go there, they’re just gonna force me to iron clothes and make them sammich.
Only if I can live on Bowie Base 1 and don’t end up with The Flood.
I’d probably bring everything that I could. Since I’d never want to leave.
During the colonization of the Americas, a lot of the first colonists died before they established successful colonies. I’d be too scared to do something like that, but in space.
No… I don’t want to die a horrible death when an error or mishap happens…but I would help those who would like to be trail-blasers.
I would love to go. I can repeat what the computer says like Sigourney Weaver in Galaxy Quest
@filmfann I’m sorry, Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
Oops, wrong movie… :-)
Yes, count me in and put me on the waiting list for trip number 500. I’m going to check how the first 499 will have done.
