How do I make this my last interview?

Asked by Sophief (6681points) April 20th, 2010

I have an interview this afternoon, it’s not the job i would want forever, but a job anyway. I’m sick of going for interviews and not getting the job. I think my interviews go pretty well, but obviously they don’t.

Any tips?

Find out as much as you can about the company. Then you will be able to ask them questions and show you are interested.
Be confident, but not pushy.
Smile and dress smartly.
I so wish you get this job. Fingers crossed

After the interview send a thank you letter (e-mail, Fax) Say stupid shit like:

Thank you for allowing me the time to learn more about XXXXXXXXXXXXX. Add some bullshit and you are done.

I had a horrible interview at a good job where there were a bunch of applicants. I hunted down the fax number for the person that did the interview. I faxed her a thank you letter the next morning. She told me it would be about a week to make a decision after the interview. 10 minutes after I sent the fax she called my house and wanted me to come in. I got the job.

@Sophief No not yet, going to get one this weekend. You changed your name?

Sophief's avatar

@partyparty Yes I changed it. Didn’t think it would happen, but Augustian very kindly changed it for me.

If you try to be funny at all during your interviews, just don’t. You suck at it. You really don’t suck and I wouldn’t know anyway, but just don’t do it.

Be yourself and don’t pretend to know more than you do. If you are confident in what you do know and your ability to learn the rest they will be happy with that. These days former experience isn’t as important as versatility. Good luck to you!

The interview went really well, but if I get it I won’t be taking it.

@Sophief Was there a problem? Salary? Working conditions?

Sophief's avatar

@partyparty I thought I was going for an admin position, but it was telesales. I’m not that hard faced to do that job, I phoned my boyfriend up after and he said he didn’t want me to do it, said he didn’t want people shouting at me all day and putting the phone down on me. no one likes telesales people

@Sophief Aw such a shame, but I couldn’t do telesales either. I am sure the right job will turn up for you very soon. Good luck with your search

@Sophief Congrats on the interview. Even if you don’t get an offer, or accept the offer, the interview can be a good learning experience. I have had literally dozens of interviews over the past two years (I started a job about 6 weeks ago). I got to the point that I considered myself a professional interviewee.

It is important to remember that an interview is a two-way process. The company wants to know if you are fit for the job, and you want to know if the job is a fit for you.

Review your interview mentally, and find some areas to fine-tune for the next one.

Hope your next interview is your last!

@Yetanotheruser I got the job, but I’m not taking it.

@Sophief Good for you, sticking to your principles. In future interviews, try to prep yourself beforehand with some positive self-affirming thoughts. You need to work on your self confidence a bit.
