Suggestions for a doggy backpack carrier (for the human to carry the dog)?
I’ve looked high and low on the Internet for a backpack carrier to carry my mutant rat terrier when I ride my bike or go for an extended hike.
Amazon and PetSmart both sell the Outward Hound Backpack Carrier, which looks okay, but Junior is too leggy to fit comfortably in it even though he’s under the weight limit (he’s 12.5 pounds).
The Teafco Action Petpack Carrier looks a little too rigid for biking or hiking.
I’d rather try one out at a local store than buy online, in case it doesn’t fit or suit my needs. (Returning online purchases can be a hassle.)
Any suggestions?

It’s my first educated guess. They seem to offer some choice, as their inventory is pretty large.
A bit too subtle, I admit. I was trying to indicate to @dpworkin that he should look at the details.
@dpworkin – I posted the link to what PetSmart offers ;-) They’re not helpful when it comes to backpack carriers.
There are times when modifying an existing product works the best. If you are the creative type, get a seat harness (doggie seatbelt) and revise it so that you can use it as a backpack-type carrier. Another seatbelt invention would take care of any pressure points where the harness straps rub you. They are padded sleeve with a velcro closure to relieve pressure points of seatbelt straps on drivers and short passengers.
If you have a petco by you they carry a brand called I-go2 that has a wide variety.
I don’t get it. Is the dog too small to walk/run itself?
I’m sorry I made a kneejerk post. You have my permission to tell me to SUYLF.
@RedPowerLady – He’s not too small. But, I would like to take him when I bike, and it’s not safe to have him run next to the bike. As far as hiking is concern, I don’t know how he will do for a several mile hike. He does fine walking 6–8 blocks, but I’ve not taken him beyond the neighborhood.
@dpworkin – <raised eyebrows> what does SUYLF mean?
“Scroll Up You Lazy Fuck” (Sometimes rendered as SBYLF, for “Scroll Back…)
@dpworkin – did you make this up? I googled it and saw nothing.
No, I’m just old. That’s from The BBS scene in the late 1980s before you could get on the Net without a T1 or from a University.
Why did they remove my up arrows? Does that mean something I don’t know about? Maybe I should have put SUYLF instead?
@dpworkin Then shouldn’t it be SUYLOF: scroll up you lazy old fuck? ;)
When my pup was little, I used to carry him in the sling and wrap I had made to carry my son. Perhaps something like that would work for you?
The best part about a wrap is how simple and inexpensive it is. Five yards of $1/yd cotton gauze, hem the edges, and badabing. Done.
You can carry him in front or on your back, quite easily.
@liminal: In my particular case, yes, but I was offering a general example.
@dpworkin I understood and was teasing you. Sorry if I cause offense.
I was right with you there. No offense at all. Tomorrow I turn fuckin’ 61. That sounds really old to me.
@phillis – great idea! I’m thinking about it now! Thanks!
@liminal and @YARNLADY – thanks for the links!
@dpworkin – that’s a cool acronym! Have you thought about submitting it to NetLingo?
@Seek_Kolinahr – I love it!! My 7-mo old puppy though would most likely wiggle out of it, even though he’s a cuddle bug.
@prolificus
There are many different ways to wear a wrap – if you like, I can provide you with links to “training” sites. You might find a style that would work for your pup. For example, I know one girl who carries her three month old, and her two year old twins, all in the same wrap, at the same time. Gotta appreciate that versatility.
it’s gotta be on there. it’s really old.
@dpworkin Can you blow out all the candles on the cake I baked you?
Maybe we can sneak a birthday party in here past the mods since we’re not officially allowed to throw them.
Think we can sing it to him?
I’ve got the knife. I’ll cut the cake after.
