What is the image on the flag in Mario games?
Ever since Super Mario Bros. came out in 1985 for NES, I never knew what the heck the picture was on the flag at the end of each level. It looks like a skull & crossbones, but it’s green, so I thought maybe it was a turtle shell, but upon closer inspection, it kind of looks like a peace sign. Does anyone know what on Earth this image actually is? – Thanks.

Definitely a peace sign. You can play it here.
Flagged, too much of a simple pole :¬}
@zophu, the flag that Mario raises up out of the castle, sure. But I’m talking about the one that Mario slides down before entering the castle. Or, according to that video you posted, it’s the flag that ‘Mario’ rips down.
@cfrydj, Great screenshot. See how it looks like a peace sign, but in a way, skull/crossbones too? Could it be Bowser’s skull??
It’s like 15 pixels. How can we bee seeing so many things in it? Doesn’t it look exactly like a green skull symbol?
@rpmpseudonym Hmm, I have to squint to not see a peace sign, but now I see the possible skull. Since it is Bowser’s castle, I guess that would make sense.
According to the Super Mario Wiki, most flagpoles are skulls, and they become increasingly clearer skulls in later versions of the game. So I’m willing to concede that I’ve seen it wrong all these years, and it is a skull, not a peace sign.
Well I’m fucking glad we figured this one out, boys. On to the next issue!
I say that since it is the boss’s castle that I imagine you are taking the flag down from, it is likely his reptilian countenance depicted on his flag.
It looks like a koopa shell.
