What would be a movie that you have consistently watched over a number of years yet still feels fresh & new?

Asked by ucme (50047points) April 23rd, 2010

Something you never tire from seeing & enjoy watching as if it were for the first time,even though you probably know the script by now.What memories does it perhaps evoke for you?

Cool hand luke! love that movie.

THat would be a movie that doesn’t exist. Once you have seen it, unless you are an amnesiac, it can no longer be “fresh”. I need to wait at least a decade or so before being able to enjoy watching a movie again. Even then it is nowhere near as entertaining as the first time.

Oh, dear, I hate to tell you, but one of my favorite movies for repeat viewing is O Brother, Where Art Thou? by the Coen brothers. I laugh at the same lines every time. To me it’s the film equivalent of a couple of beers and a barbecue. I don’t even like a couple of beers and a barbecue, and some part of me doesn’t really want to love this movie, but I do.

Another recurring favorite is the entire extended-edition Lord of the Rings trilogy, except for the scenes with Liv Tyler in them. My son and I watch and rewatch it together, sometimes as a marathon.

Movies I keep coming back to after lapses of time include Willow, the 1938 Adventures of Robin Hood with Erroll Flynn, and Gone with the Wind.

“It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” (1963) and “Christmas Vacation” (1989) have become traditions in my family. I’ve seen both movies many times and I never get tired of them. I like to go at least a year before seeing either one again, but I absolutely love both movies (and so do my parents) and I never tire of them.

I’ve also seen “The Amityville Horror” (1979) several times in the past year. One of the few movies I know that actually freaks me out.

Gladiator with Russell Crowe. One of the greatest movies of all time.

Anything that has lots of detail that you miss first time round. Or films that evoke a strong emotional response in you. For example (in no particular order):

Forest Gump – Always makes me feel sad;
Moulin Rouge! – Loads to look at in this one;
The Shawshank Redemption – Obvious, but has a great ending;
The Nightmare Before Christmas – Again, loads of things to notice on a repeat viewing;
The Lost Weekend – Brilliant acting in this one. One of my top ten films. Watch it!

I am pretty sure no one has ever heard of mine. It is called Dance Me Outside
I am not a movie owner typically b/c I can’t stand watching them over and over. But I went out of my way to find and buy a copy of this one. It is so poignant.

An American in Paris

(I love Gene Kelly’s dancing and the colors are gorgeous. Those old Technicolor films really hold up well)

Harold and Maude

(so quirky, so cool and the kick-ass soundtrack by Cat Stevens is just great)

Mask

(it doesn’t get rerun that often, but when it does, I’ll always go along for the ride. Great casting. Terrific story)

The Education of Little Tree

(not a well known film, unfortunately, but a beautiful little story set in a more bucolic and less hectic time and place.)

Blade Runner

(I’m not sure why, but another one I can watch over and over)

Lawrence of Arabia

(it’s a classic for a reason. Exceptionally well done and Peter O’Toole isn’t that hard to look at either.)
