Is this dataset too big for Excel to handle?

Asked by kfingerman (1012points) April 23rd, 2010

I’ve got about 60000 points. Getting it all in Excel is no problem, but when I start doing more complex functions, like subtotal, it’s running MEGA slow. This is on a Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM. When I tried to chart about 5000 points – x y scatter style – so that I could run some stats, fit a line, find errors, etc, it froze up for real. Am I just pushing up against limits of excel or is there something else wrong?

It sounds like your limit is your CPU, not Excel.

60,000 rows and how many columns?

Are any of the columns formulas? That can slow things down a lot (and can be cured by copying the formulas and choosing Edit->Past Special->Paste Values).
