Fancy a meet-up for Earth Day 2010 in Washington DC on 4/25?

Asked by mcbealer (10232points) April 23rd, 2010

The weather is not supposed to be the greatest with rain forecasted for much of the day and afternoon.

Still, this is a big celebration being it’s the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, plus Sting is performing and well… I’ve always wanted to see him Live.

So, any flutherites planning to attend?

Ps. It’s the 25th, not 24th.

It is too late for me to arrange a flight. Thanks for inviting me though. I would love to see Sting! Take pictures for us.

@rangerr ~ oops! THANKS! have to see about getting the mods to fix this ?

Are you going to be there all day?

rangerr's avatar

You can flag your own question.

And I might be a bit late, but I will definitely be there all day.

anartist's avatar

I’ll be there. It’s a 15-minute walk to the mall for me.

rangerr's avatar

Also. It’s supposed to be storming like crazy on Sunday.
Just a warning.

AstroChuck's avatar

Sorry. I’ll be at the Festival De La Familia at Cal Expo in Sacramento.

I love Sting, and would be thrilled to see you guys… but I hate crowds. And rain. :(

mcbealer's avatar

@anartist ~ yay! hope to hear from you then…
@rangerr ~ are you still in?!? funny, it’s @anartist‘s profile that says ‘weather wimp’
@augustlan ~ but you could crowd surf!!
@AstroChuck ~ snap! I would so love to meet you!!

I also love Sting, but hate crowds. People I don’t know touching me. Now if I know them, then they can outright grope me.
It wouldn’t be that far for me to drive, but I don’t think I’ll be going.

syz's avatar

Ok, that’s just mean! By great coinkydink, I am headed to DC, but I won’t be there until the 26th.

mcbealer's avatar

@syz ~ oh no! what an honor it would have been to meet you!!
@chyna ~ don’t let the crowds keep you away… it really doesn’t get that crowded due to the size of the National Mall. Last year, the Flaming Lips performed, and even though we were up front, there was plenty of room to groove without bumping into any neighbors. It almost had a relaxed family picnic feel to it.

I love crowds, but i hate Sting.
So no, i won’t attend.
Plus, i live across the ocean.

rangerr's avatar

@mcbealer I’m definitely still in. I love crowds like that.

rangerr's avatar

ALSO!
It’s not just Sting.
Reverend Jesse Jackson, film director James Cameron, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, Olympic gold medalist Billy Demong, producer Trudie Styler, author Margaret Atwood, NFL player and television personality Dhani Jones, environmental photographer Sebastian Copeland and many more.

The Climate Rally will also feature live music from Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Jimmy Cliff, Passion Pit, Bob Weir, Willie Colón, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Booker T, Honor Society and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

@rangerr and @mcbealer did you meet? I got there late, my friend wanted to do something else at the Arboretum. Got there at 4. Was pretty cool. took lots of pix.

rangerr's avatar

@anartist We did! We were in the very front and middle for a majority of the day. I left at 5:30ish, though. I have close to 300 pictures I have to go through.

anartist's avatar

Very Good. I was around the front edges where people walked all the way around on both sides. bet you got great pix of show—i stayed till 630—will put a few of pix on flickr—most came out boring

rangerr's avatar

@anartist Send me the link when you put them up!

mcbealer's avatar

@rangerr ~ hope you got some much needed rest :)
I slept a long time today (Monday) ha ha

@anartist ~ link me too please!

Yay! Got to meet @rangerr and her friend :) and we had some pretty awesome neighbors!!
It was a blast, and the music was so unbelievable… danced all day it seems
I stayed a couple of songs into Sting’s set and then had to go :l

I will post a link below to my pics later on this week.

rangerr's avatar

@mcbealer I definitely got a lot of sleep. Though I did find out that The Roots came back out. I’m a bit sad that I missed out on more dancing and their amazing sets. And our neighbors were totally great!

mcbealer's avatar

Brandon Wu has posted some excellent images from the event on flickr

rangerr's avatar

@mcbealer Those are great! And my friend has a fantastic picture of him in that set!

anartist's avatar

@rangerr @mcbealer
The Brandon Wu stuff is great!
Here is a link to my more modest stuff.: Earth Day 2010

@anartist ~ cool pics! You did a great job capturing the vibe there :)

anartist's avatar

@mcbealer aw, shucks. Thanks.

anartist's avatar

@rangerr Thanx for the picture link. You got some really good pix of the performances! I was way too far away. Did you get any pix of @mcbealer?

rangerr's avatar

@mcbealer Is the one in blue.

mcbealer's avatar

check out my pics

anartist's avatar

@mcbealer Nice pix. It’s interesting that we each got different aspects of the event. I enjoyed this!

mcbealer's avatar

@anartist ~ yeah, I know… I was thinking the same thing about the perspectives we each captured. I just wish we had gotten to meet you!!! That, and since I pretty much spent all day up front I didn’t get to meet the Avatar characters. They look sooo cool!
