What are some emotional songs?

Asked by Draconess25 (4461points) April 24th, 2010

What are some songs that give you just this deep, emotional gut feeling? And why?

They don’t have to be slow or depressing; almost every Breaking Benjamin song does this to me.

Oh goodness. There are lots. But I’ll tell you the first that came to my mind. It is a country song that my Uncle used to play all the time. I don’t even listen to country on my own. But this song always touched me.

If you get there before I do

Two spring to mind:
1 House of hearts by Rory Block (about her son who got killed in a traffic accident)
2 Back on the Chain Gang by The Pretenders (listen here at 2min37 when she sings “sta-ha-har-har-rt”..., for a reason that every time brings tears to my eyes)

And how about: My Funny Valentine by Chet Baker?

“I See You” by Leona Lewis from Avatar because it’s just an extremely powerful, strangely emotional and insightful song.
“I’ll Stand By You” because it’s a really loving song that my mom used to sing that to me all the time before my parents divorced. I can’t really listen to it anymore.
Of course, there’s “The Circle of Life” from The Lion King. I can’t think of anyone who isn’t empowered by that song.
“I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz just makes me really happy because it’s whimsical and cheerful.
“Speed of Sound” by Coldplay…not really sure why, actually.
The Harry Potter music gets a strong emotional reaction from me, too, but that’s probably just because I’m a Harry Potter freak. :P
“Not Ready to Make Nice” by The Dixie Chicks. I’m not actually a fan of country but I love the message.
There are probably a lot more that I can’t think of off of the top of my head.
That dang Christmas Shoes song gets me every time, too.

Almost everything Karen Carpenter ever sang overflowed with emotion. Perhaps ‘Hurting Each Other’ most of all.

And, um, the Firefly theme song.

Sia – Breathe Me
They used this song in the final episode of “Six Feet Under” (HBO) a few years ago. In this show, they did a fast-forward of about 25 years of the lives of everyone in the show and showed how everyone died. So basically the entire cast died to this song. It was very emotional watching everyone in the cast die when you had been watching this show from the beginning.

Teresa Teng’s “Airport”, a song about departing lovers. Sorry it’s in Japanese, but just listening to Miss Teng you can feel the emotion she brings to the song.

@MRSHINYSHOES & @anartist Language doesn’t matter. I’m relatively multilingual, & emotion is a universal language.

All the other songs listed here are great. there is really one true song that tells it all, if a man is really in love with one and one only woman.

Its by Bryan Adams…............

“Everything I Do, I Do It For You”

Unchained Melody by The Rightious Bros.

Anything by Bright Eyes or Regina Spektor.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@Draconess25 I’m glad you acknowledge that fact about music——you can hear the very expressive emotion in Miss Teng’s voice. A lot of “emotional” songs are recorded, but often singers just go through the “motions” without really putting their heart and soul into the song. That is a pity.

@MRSHINYSHOES Well, music is an art. Art is the oldest known form of communication.
