General Question

Would you kindly recommend a book for me?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) April 26th, 2010

For my final project in my historiography class I have to make a powerpoint presentation that compares the usefulness of film media and written text. The movie my partner and I have to watch is Casablanca, so I thought I could select a book about the Vichy Moroccan government or about the African campaign of WWII in general. The problem is, I can’t find any decent books on the subject. That’s where you come in, Fluther.

Can you recommend a preferably short book on the subject of Morocco during WWII, or just Africa in WWII in general?

I’m not asking for you to do my homework for me, I’m simply asking for any recommendations. I know there are a lot of hardcore readers on Fluther, so I figured this would be a good resource for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

This is long but sounds like to might be the ticket. Maybe you could skim it?

Well, I read The Power of One earlier this year. It’s about South Africa during WWII, so it’s about as far from Morocco as you can get while still being in Africa…but still.
It’s a really good book if you’re interested, whether it works for the assignment or not.

P.S.What in the hell is historiography?

TexasDude's avatar

@janbb, most of the people who have presented already have clearly skimmed their assigned works and they all have made A’s. I was thinking about reading a book on Rommel anyway.

@squidcake, Hey, at least it’s a suggestion. Oh, and historiography is the study of how history is written and studied at least according to my professor

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard
That’s interesting. I think you should make a class on the study of how historiography is the study of how history is studied.

That would be called historioiographyphy, amirite?

squidcake's avatar

SO RITE.
Or perhaps historiographyology.

@squidcake only if it was written in long-hand

See if you can find a Patton biography. The early parts of his WW2 experience were in Morroco and Algeria. I would suggest David Andrew Smith’s.

Well, after a brief search I found this, An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942–1943.

Apparently, the author, Rich Atkinson, is a Pulitzer Prize winner for writing history books.

Hmm—I wonder if maybe you should look for one about the invasion of Paris instead. That might be easier to find literature about, and it certainly figures in the story.

But—usefulness? The film doesn’t attempt to be useful at all. I can’t imagine how you could interpret it in terms of usefulness, except as a vehicle for patriotic wartime sentiment.

TexasDude's avatar

@WestRiverrat, excellent, didn’t think of that. Thanks.

@aprilsimnel, Great! I’ll see if the library has a copy.

@Jeruba, I know, it’s sort of dumb. I think it has more to do with the portrayal than the actual content or message.

I got mine by searching on Rommel who was all about the campaign in North Africa. You might be able to find another shorter book on him.

This one may only be available for Kindle (though government reports are probably available free somewhere)

This one is available online, published by the US Army in 1957

@jaytkay, excellent. These are great suggestions. Thank you so much.

@janbb, there are tons of books on him. I think I can manage. Thanks again.

That’s easy. Germans rolled in French rolled over.

TexasDude's avatar

@SeventhSense, lol nice.

Except the French Resistance did fight pretty hard and lost a lot of good men and women. Too bad they were horribly outnumbered by the idle bystanders.

I couldn’t resist…

Here’s one book about the French resistance that’s interesting and a pretty quick read:

And There Was Light: Autobiography of Jacques Lusseyran, Blind Hero of the French Resistance

@Jeruba, excellent. Thank you.

This book has a couple chapters that deal with WW2 dessert warfare, it is mostly from the British point of view.

@WestRiverrat I have long since made an A on this assignment, but I can always do with more reading material. Thank you!
