when is it ok to eat wild mussels in northern california

Asked by isorabins (53points) March 11th, 2008

I went up to the beach today and gathered a whole bunch of wild mussels. I heard that there are times of the year when you’re not supposed to eat them. Does anyone know if march is an ok time to eat mussels you find on the beach

i wouldn’t eat any of them.

leave it to the people who have made a profession out of it.

Do you really want red tide?

thats like going in the woods and collecting a bunch of mushrooms and asking people on fluther which ones i could eat.

It’s actually legal and ok to harvest, cook, and eat mussels in northern california, and I myself have done so. You can’t harvest mussels between May 1 and October 31, according to California fish and game website here. Also make sure you’re not in any of these protected areas, and have fun!

thank you hannahsugs, as for the other too, you need to get out more.

It’s nothing about getting out more, they are just trying to tell you that there are some risks involved and just make sure you know what you’re doing. Have fun and enjoy your mussels.

Also it’s two not too ^_^
