Can you please privide me with a recipe for "french toast bake?"?

Asked by JLeslie (65790points) April 27th, 2010

I’m not sure what to call it, but it is basically like french toast that you make in a casserole or baking dish, that is not individual pieces of bread like when you make it on the stove, but served more like a lasagna. I’ll have real maple syrup and fruit to put with it. I want it for a brunch I will be hosting.

The few times I have had it in the past, sometimes it is too wet, I don’t like very soggy or mushy bread. So, I am looking for a recipe that will cook up fairly firm.

Thanks ahead of time.

The Joy of Cooking has a pretty good recipe for overnight baked French toast, but I don’t have it handy.

I’ve made Baked French Toast Casserole for Christmas breakfast a few times, and it is delicious. The french bread holds up well, so you don’t end up with a soggy mess, and the praline topping is to die for.

Be warned, it is not diet food. You may gain a few pounds just smelling it. For a special event though, it will make a lot of people happy. It also has to be made the night before, so you in the morning you only need to pop it into the oven. You can easily serve the fruit with it.

Use Challah as the bread. Depending on the amount you are making, you have to vary the amount of milk and eggs. For a 13×9x2 casserole full, I would use 8 eggs and 2 cups milk (or for special occasion, extra rich half and half).

Mix the eggs and milk well. Sprinkle it with a little bit of nutmeg. Soak the bread in the egg and milk mixture.

Bake in a 350 degree oven about 40 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.
