People say that persons who wear glasses and have extreme fashion nightmares are considered nerds. Or people who are extremely good at computers are nerds.What exactly is a nerd and how do you define a nerd?

I am a little bit of all of those in the venn diagram, so I’d say I’m a nerd also.

Why doesn’t this help you? What aspect of nerdiness is the basis of your question; dress, appearance, manner of speaking? Nerds don’t care about fashionable clothes, they don’t know how to interact with “normal”, less intelligent people and they’re usually obsessed with esoteric things that most people around them aren’t like computer programming (not just being on the computer), WoW, Star Trek, sure, chess, or go to anime cons and have problems interacting romantically with girls. The female nerds are few and far in between, but have the same issues going on.

Ok what if they dress well and attract alot of girls but is still crazy about Star Trek. Are they nerds? What about people who do the right thing all the time are they nerds?
Someone who is to into, what ever it is,their into.And are affraid of the opposite sex.
A nerd is usually a well behaved young person whom is more interested in non-physical activities such as comics, literature, movies & computer games, as opposed to being interested in physical (usually sporting) activities and having sex with women.
“Nerd” can be defined by many different things.
People who play massive amounts of video games (more importantly RPGs)
People who do lots of things with computers (programming, design, etc.)
People who like fantasy stuff. Whether it be Sci-Fi or magic/dragons/things of that sort.
People who like comic books can be considered nerds.
People who like to read lots of books.
People who play things like Magic the Gathering, WoW, Age of Empires, Pokemon, etc.
There is really tons of things you can do to be classified as a nerd.
I myself am pretty darn nerdy and I love it.
Ok. I like computers alot. I like to play chess. Im shy around girls and I dont play sports. I dress pretty good, but some ppl say that im in a shell…am I a nerd?

A nerd is alot like the old saying about what is the definition of obscene. It’s hard to describe but I know it when I see it.
I think a nerd is someone who has low self confidence and has trouble expressing themselves and does weird and annoying things to get attention….is that a nerd?
@cornbird No, a nerd doesn’t do anything to get attention, as a general rule. They avoid attention like the plague. A nerd does weird and annoying things because they enjoy doing those things.
@Snarp but if someone behaves like that in high school they will be called nerds..if they behave like Kenan and Kel
That’s probably because every generation group of teens redefines “nerd” for themselves. But as a general rule, nerds since the mid-1970s are pretty much supersmart social inept misfits, usually guys, who like sci-fi, computers and role-playing games.
You know that CBS show The Big Bang Theory? Those dudes are (young adult) nerds.

@cornbird No offense intended, but yes, you are a nerd. It’s not necessarily a bad thing though. I think ultimately the nerds will end up getting the prettiest/youngest women in the long term as money becomes more important to women than being captain of the football team does.
@chels To me hot is sexy. A girl can be good looking without being sexy. I think a female nerd can be sexy to a guy, but I’m not sure girls feel the same way about nerdy guys.

What makes you a nerd is that you’re obsessing over what a nerd is. When I was in high school a friend of mine and I pretty much had the entire social hierarchy mapped out complete with complete plans for how to infiltrate a given part of that hierarchy given a fresh start at a new school. Total nerds.
to me a nerd is anyone who goes overboard with anything that has to do with education.
