What are these marks on this box jellyfish survivor's legs?

Okay, so, I was reading this article, and she survived an encounter with the “killer” box jellyfish, which apparently is amazing. The only thing I want to know is this – what are the marks on her legs? Aren’t box jellyfish very small? Would the lines be her veins/muscle sinews? Or are they, in fact, lines from the tentacles?

From what I understand, their tentacles are extremely long, though the “box” part is not.

Edit: Check this out.

@Taciturnu : ohhh. okay.
but for the blue and reddish colored things – are those veins?

EW IS HER LEG SEE THROUGH?

troubleinharlem's avatar

@deni – I thought it looked cool.

Taciturnu's avatar

@troubleinharlem I think those are just welts from the sting.

It does look cool but it does really look like her legs are see through and you can see all the veins and stuff.

@Taciturnu – Okay! That makes sense. Thanks. (:

I don’t think those are veins. The dark “vein” marks are going horizontal. If they were veins, they’d be in a vertical position (toward the heart).

I don’t know, but I once had wounds from a less dangerous jelly, and it must have had its tentacles wrapped around my leg at some point.

It looks like dead tissue or tissue that’s oxygen/blood deprived. I would assume either from venom or swelling of the tentacles.

It’s all scarring. Take a look at google image searches and read the article @Taciturnu posted. Hers are really bad, but it has the same general patterns.

Sort of has a fern pattern.

I could imagine someone paying good money for that look.

the blue and reddish markings could possibly be subcutaneous hemorrhage or necrosis
