I majored in baking and pastry and used to be the head pastry chef/ specialty cake decorator at my old job. I recently left it because i was getting alot of request for cakes on the side. I decided I would get a Mon- Fri job and start my own cake business out of my house. It has been going really well, I have a myspace page (www.myspace.com/Kingofcakes) where people can look at my work and contact me through, but i think i need to get an official website because myspace throws some people off. I need suggestions on the best way to do this..? should i hire a company to do it? Or use those do it Yourself sites? Any suggestions?? someone mentioned to me to start a blog?

Google Pages Sites might be good.
I’d also recommend Wordpress. It’s ostensibly a blogging site, but you can structure it with “Pages” instead of “Posts.”
Note that if you want your own website—“mybakingwhatever.com” and not “mybakingwhatever.wordpress.com”—you’ll have to both buy a domain name (~$15/year) and buy a server host (~$100/year). Dreamhost provides both, and they make it very easy to use Wordpress. That said, they’re the only ones I’ve ever tried using… but I’m pretty happy with them
I work for a web design company here in Austin, TX. This depends on what you want to get out of the new site. If your goal is to just have photos of your cakes and start a little buzz, try a blog (blogger.com, or word press).
But if you’re interested in having a flexible system where you can take orders, make appointments, and have an online portfolio, it might make sense to hire a company. If you take this route, be prepared to pay anywhere from 5,000 – 15,000 for a quality site. If you pay anything less, (dare I say) you’ll be wasting your money. Most cheaper sites or companies will use a template and spice up the deal with some lame search engine package. The general rule always applies: you get what you pay for.
So in summary… to expand your business online – hire a company like us! To get the word out and show off your cakes, just go with a simple blog.
Good luck!
If you’re on a Mac, every machine comes with iWeb which is a very easy way to get started. Rapidweaver is a great Mac app that is a bit like iWeb on steroids with tons of professional themes available. If you’re on a PC you might want to go the wordpress route that others have mentioned.
Thanks for the advice! I started a wordpress blog acct and it all looks good! Im gonna pay to get the personal domain and customize the pages to fit my needs!
